IBrowse Error message #8000000D - hard disk problem?
« on: December 10, 2005, 08:58:51 PM »
Hi there folks, (this is a copy of the latest posting in this thread from the S/W forum), copied here since it now refers to a hard disk problem.

well I'm not so sure that increasing the stack size did really help, because I am now getting a different system error.

My hard drive is partitioned :-

dh0: system 25M
start cylinder 1
end cylinder 156

dh1: work 136M
start cylinder 157
end cylinder 979

After switching on my 1200 the other night my hard drive booted but "whirred" for a long time and I rxd. a system error message:-
Work has a checksum error on block 39179

and when I try to access any programs on Work i get another system message:-
volume Work is not validated

If I click cancel on this message about three times I can usually access the prgram I was after.
Also if I double click on the Work icon or use DW to examine Work the info bar indicates a volume which is full at 136m which I know is not the case.

I have used HDToolbox, Verify data on drive option but this just comes back with no errors found.
I have also looked at the Modify bad block option but I am not sure how to convert the block (39179) with the checksum error into the format used in this option i.e.
cylinder =
head =
sector = OR bytes from Index =
The drive in question is a WD caviar lite 170

I'm not sure why the HD Toolbox can't find any errors on the drive or even if I can enter the data for the bad block in the correct format it will resolve the problem.

Any help with using HD Toolbox or validating Work or this problem in general much appreciated.

Ian.

I would try DiskSalve by Dave Haynie,

http://ftp.uni-paderborn.de/pub/aminet/disk/salv/DiskSalv11_32.lha
Use the repair option,  it will check the disk and revalidate it for you.  Has never let me down :-)

DiskSalv has helped me recover several disks and I don't see why it wouldn't work on a HD too :)

Ok, fixed with Disksalv

although did need to run it twice, after first run I kept getting a "block out of range" system error message.

Not sure what Framiga was trying to say since dh0: didn't start at cylinder 2 - but cylinder 1 ??

 many thanks

There needs to be some space in the beginning of the HDD for the partitions table, file systems and all this stuff which can be edited with HDToolbox. Therefore HDtoolbox reserves two cylinders and does not allow a partition to begin before cylinder 2. So you must have used another program than HDToolbox to initially install the HDD.

Because there are no bad blocks on the drive. All these error messages you got came from the file system and not from the HDD. The checksums mentioned are part of the data portion of the blocks. For the HDD the blocks seem to be totally ok. It's just the logical data which can only be interpreted by the file system which was corrupted.

While you are at it, you should create an additional small partition which you can easily format at any time for IBrowse's cache. Because IBrowse (as well as any other Internet program) is known to crash every now and then and usually pulls the cache partition down with it.

Bye,
Thomas
