C64 DTV on PCI card - would this be possible?
« on: November 27, 2005, 10:28:52 AM »
I've had an idea  :-D

The C64 DTV chip on a PCI card with a TV Card-like application running on the Workbench to display the video output in a window. When the window is selected, the software routes keyboard and joystick input to the PCI card, which in turn routes these inputs to the DTV chip.

It's a C64 on a PCI card!  :-)  :-)  :-)  :-)  :-)

Why not just run an emulator?

Because DTV is a real C64 reduced to a single chip. It just feels better knowing it's somewhat the real thing rather than an emulator  :-)

it's not a 'real' c64. it's a chip that emulates a c64. And I hear it's not very compatible with software other than found on it by default. chances are your software emulator will be much more compatible with c64 software than c64dtv.

That's not what it says here.

Specifically:
"Ms. Ellsworth has squeezed the entire circuitry of a two-decade-old Commodore 64 home computer onto a single chip..."

To have that 'real thing' feeling, I just have the real thing. :-)

I was thinking of getting hold of a non-working C64 and replacing the motherboard with a DTV. Hopefully this would leave enough room inside the case to build a disk drive in to it, making it an all-in-one unit.

Would that work?
My 1541 diskdrive is huuuuuuuge, because it's not just a diskdrive, it has a diskdrive controlling unit and a serial interface.
But I've never seen a 1581, maybe that one's small enough to fit in the c64 case... But anyhoo it'd be cheaper and easier to find a working c64+1541.
Nice hobbying around btw :-)

I'm not sure if you can fit a disk drive controller into a c64, but you can fit a dtv into a 1571 like this guy did ... very innovative project !

I haven't had a C64 and 1541 for a few years so I can't really remember how big they are. I do remember the 1541 being very large due to the size of the controller board. I may try to find a 1581 or FD-2000. If the uIEC is ever available then I will use that with a compact flash card.
