Getting Voodoo 3000 working on Mediator 1200SX
« on: October 29, 2005, 09:53:00 AM »
I've just got my replacement accelerator and Voodoo card, and all appears to be working ok. I can now boot with 68040.library present and pciinfo now reveals that I have a voodoo card installed.

I have installed all of the software from the Mediator CD, and also the updates which I received from Elbox, but I am unable to select any Voodoo screenmodes. The installer didn't appear to install anything in DEVS:Monitors, or a P96 prefs programme, just libraries for the Voodoo, P96 and Warp3D.

Anyone know how I go about selecting a Voodoo screenmode?

Thanks
Mark

Ok I think I worked it out, I have to install P96 myself from the OS3.9 disc...

Sounds like a matter of RTFM. Check the multimedia CD, there are docs in each directory. Check also those directories, you don't have hardware for. For example the Voodoo4&Voodoo5 dir contains important hints for the Voodoo installation in general.

Basically you have to install Picasso96 youself, choosing a Cybervision64 (IIRC) as graphics card. Then go to devs/dosdrivers and rename the CVision driver to Voodoo. Finally change the tooltypes of the driver to point to Voodoo.card instead of CVision.card or so. But don't rely on this, better read the docs yourself.

Bye,
Thomas

Ok, I have done what it said in the instructions:

1. Installed Picasso96, using Cybervision64/3D driver
2. Renamed the monitor to Voodoo
3. Changed the tooltype to BOARDTYTPE=voodoo
4. Double clicked the monitor

When I go in to Picasso96Mode, the "attach setting to" menu just shows "No board". If I open a shell, go to Devs:monitors and type Voodoo, I get an error "Picasso96: Could not create graphics board contect for 'voodoo', please check your Picasso96 installation!"

I don't know what to do now :(

Well, I'm not sure what I did but it appears to be working now. I uninstalled and reinstalled P96 and I am now able to test P96 screenmodes and they appear on my VGA screen!!! :D :D :D

The only problem is that they appear to be double height, it the width is 100% of the width of the screen but the height is twice as big as the screen, so I can only see the top 50% of the screen. I hope that made sense :) How can I change this?

Have you started the P96 install again and chosen UPDATE to select the monitor khz rate etc?
I know I had to run the install twice to get it working on my A4000 if I'm not mistaken.
I remember that the folder with screenmodes was empty because the first P96 install hadn't filled it with anything but it did during the 2nd install

Yes I ran the setup again and selected 31khz for my monitor. But the display is still stretched off the screen :(

Edit: I've just noticed the following in ScreenMode:

Visible Size  1024x768
Minimum Size 640x200
Maximum Size 1024x2048

Could that max size be why it's stretched?

Ok, it's all working now :) I think the problem was that Interlaced mode was turned on, which meant that the scan rate was doubled. But if I turned off Interlace then my monitor would refuse to display the screenmode. So I noted the scan rate with Interlace turned on, then turned interlace mode off, and changed the scan rate to the one I noted, and it now displays perfectly!  :-D

Congrats!  :-)

I remember I had to sweat alot for it to work here also once upon a time.
Haven't done it now for some time so I would probably have to scratch my head a bit to get it working

Next challenge: PCI ethernet card :-)  As soon as I get it working, I'm backing up - don't want to have to go through this again!!! Still, it's a good feeling when it all starts working  :-D
