3 Button Mouse
« on: October 18, 2005, 12:50:34 PM »
Hello

Could anyone please help me? I purchased a three button mouse for the Amiga off Ebay and it is as dead as a dodo.

It is an ADDUP three button mouse, (If that helps).

I have tried a standard 3 button driver from AMINET, but to no avail. Does it need a specific driver?

See picture link below

Many Thanks

Gavin

If it is really an Amiga mouse, then it does not need any driver. You just plug it into the mouse port and it works as if the original Amiga mouse was plugged in. The middle button of course has no function normally because no software makes use of it.

Those drivers on Aminet are for serial PC mice which plug into the serial port.

Do not plug an Amiga mouse into the serial port and do not plug a serial mouse into the Amiga mouse port. Both might destroy the mouse and the port.

Bye,
Thomas

Whewwww  :-D  glad this isn't about one of the
few mice I sold on EBay.

If the mouse isn't spifically rewired to the Amiga
port then it won't work. Serial mice can't be just
rewired to work on the Amiga mouse port (I think).
They require an adaptor like the 'Mr Mysza'.
A Bus Mouse can be rewired.

I just looked at the EBay link. If the buttons are
dead then the mouse is really 'Dead'. But if the
buttons work then you could try opening it up and
clean the contact wheels (not the ball wheels) with
spray contact cleaner. This works for the mice I have.
(I have my doubts about this mouse, I can't sell the ones
I have THAT cheap)

I still have a few 3 button mice that work on the mouse port.
The middle button works with any software that
supports it. The only problem I've found with the mice
I have is they need to be cleaned more often than a
Commodore mouse, other-wise they work great. If anyone
is interested in one, Email me :-)

If anyone here at A.Org has bought one of my
'HeadStart EXPLORER' mice, I would be interested in
hearing your opinion.

As the first respondent said, any true Amiga mouse should plug in and work. However, of it is an optical mouse, some require a special mouse pad to "see" any movement. If the buttons are dead too, then the broblem is deeper.
There is a samll program called MMB (Middle Mouse Button - tricky huh?) that allows setting the middle button to several tasks.
I wish you luck.

Thank you everyone for your input.

I think maybe I have been mislead on the Ebay advert,(AMIGA - ADDUP 3 BUTTON MOUSE FOR USE ON ALL AMIGAS), but what can you do? Silly me.

It was just one of them last minute bids that you regret ever witnessing, not the end of the world though.

Thanks again

Gavin.

As an after-thought (a guess) that mouse is probably
an old stock PC XT serial mouse. You could try getting
a 9 pin adaptor for your serial port and D/L the driver
from Aminet.

I used to use the middle button on my Wizard mouse to swap between main and work pages in Brilliance (IIRC, that was the program, but it could have been another paint program). I wonder what else uses middle buttons on Amiga.
