copy errors in Toaster 4.1-4.3 install
« on: October 02, 2005, 04:21:34 PM »
Here's a curious thing... I'm installing my Toaster4000 into the Beast('060 Tower) and I seem to be done(using the Newtek install script) so when I click on a couple of icons I get a brief flash and then nothing. I check quite a few and get nothing. So I boot up Dopus and examine the CD and HD and find that although I have the entire directory tree as what's on the CD, I have no files. Just the directories. So I started copying all the files through Dopus, one directory at a time. At several points I get "error 11 file not copied", which I took to maybe be the original problem. Then, for some odd reason I had this distant memory of a similar problem and I try copying the files not copied by using the 'copy' command in a shell. Same error, and file not copied. Then that distant memory nags me some more and I try using Dopus to copy the file into Ram: and it copies just fine. Then I copy that file into the correct directory on the HD and it copies just fine as well. So that's how I will get them all installed, but what is happening here? The files appear to copy with all the bits and bytes in the right place, but whycum the installer script is not able to do the job? The Beast is running OS 3.9 and has that unique '060 but otherwise is just a Tower, nothing very fancy and I have BB1&2 on board. I am confused.... :-?

I am not familiar with your system specs so you may have tried this, but...

Have you scanned through the Newtek Faqs;

Specifically the one titled;
"Setting MaxTransfer For A4000 IDE Hard Drives"

If your drive is SCSI I guess that isn't it.  Still there is lots of good information there.

Although I have installed the Toaster software from CD multiple times on my 4000's with no problems, it was always under 3.1. I am also using AsimCDFS as the file system. I do have 3.9, just not on the Toaster machine yet.

Keep us posted
Jeff

I just spent the afternoon doing a clean OS3.9/VT4000 4.3 install on my newly assembled A4000T (Picasso IV, CS MKIII 060, VT4000). Both versions installed fine with this config and are working so far with a couple of exceptions.

Some of the older files installed from the NewTek CD overwrote newer system libraries and caused problems. Version.library 39.XX was one. I had done a back up of the OS3.9 install (prior to installing the VT software) so I copied the Libs: directory over the top again after the NewTek install and that fixed a lot of problems for me.

Since the onboard IDE controller seems to be problematic with Hard Drives on this machine I attached the CD-Rom as the only device on the IDE port with AsimCDFS and used an UW SCSI drive on the CS MKIII controller for the software install and all the files copied fine.

The VT4000 effects Icons on my system don't seem to be using the AGA colors as I have seen in some screenshots of other systems. They are all just grayscale on mine. The VT jumpers are set correctly. Can anyone tell me how to verify if the Toaster is using the AGA chipset?  The screenmode I choose before running the switcher is NTSC 256 colors.

Thank You and good luck

Icon colors on my machine are also not right. Here's more problems: I started the project of moving files thru ram: to the HD and found that I was getting that "error 11" again from time to time even though some files make the move. The odd thing is the inconsistancy: if I try the copy command several times occasionally one of the files which would not copy, does! In one case all the files in a directory started with the error message and then copied just fine. The CD doesn't seem to be scratched, although parts look a tad cloudy. I'm going to see about cleaning it carefully and trying again. The Beast has a scsi HD for the OS but uses an IDE CD and HD for programs and data files. Yeah, that might be strange enough to be the problem, as might the libs issue. I had some problems originally finding the right '060 lib for the one of a kind '060 board. Finally, one consistancy is that the files which make the move are 'filename.i' files and the ones which do not are the 'filename' type with no extension. Except occasionally the 'filename' files get copied after a few tries. I'm not savy enough to know about changing settings and such. I have always just done a straight install and then used the program, so I'll have to educate myself. About the only thing I do in that area is raise a stack size, but of course I don't know what a stack is or why they tell me to raise it. I was always able to drop Larry a line and he's explain it but with him gone I'm floating free and confused. sigh.

If I recall somewhere in the VT manual, the latest OS version that the VT software runs under without any problems is 3.1  Newtek didn't upgrade the software for 3.5 or beyond.

I have a feeling that the Beast is going to have to be dropped down to 3.1 as it just seems to have a lot of problems with 3.9.... ya know?
