ELBOX 4xEIDE'99 and OS 3.9
« on: April 21, 2004, 04:44:05 AM »
Has anyone been able to get OS 3.9 and an Elbox 4xEIDE'99 to work together?

I installed OS 3.0 on a fresh drive.  I then installed the EIDE drivers.  Everything worked great.  I was able to access my OS 3.9 CD and start the install.

After OS 3.9 installed I lost the CD-Rom drive.  I followed through the readme and made some changes to the startup-sequence but still no luck.

I don't think the drivers are OS 3.9 aware.  The readme only speaks of 3.5.  I tried to use the IDEFIX that came with 3.9 but it does not seem to work with the 4xEIDE'99.

Any ideas?

I used to have 4xEIDE'99 and it worked fine with OS3.9. I've sold it a long time ago though. I do remember that in order to use the secondary channel you needed drivers, but for the primary port only, it should work without drivers in the default SPLIT mode, IIRC.

Works fine here.  If the CD worked with the emergency boot floppy then just copy the icon from the floppy to your HD.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Hello!

First of all, you can't run IDEFIX together with Elbox's IDE controller.

I'm running OS 3.9 with the Elbox IDE Controller, and it works great, but for some unknown reasons, the OS3.9 installation removes the ATA3.driver from the startup-sequence. You will need to add this line to your startup-sequnce again:

"dh0:c/ata3.driver" (if you have the ata3.driver file in your "c" directory, and if your harddrive is "dh0".)

This line must be in the top of the startup-sequence, before setpatch anyway. I have it as the first line in my startup-sequence.

If you don't want to see all your drives everytime you boot up your amiga, then you can add QUIET after the ata3.driver.

One more thing, you will want to change the pio mode of all your drives to pio 5, otherwise it will not be so fast, and when you have changed the mode to pio 5, don't forget to click the resident box. Otherwise your changes will not be saved for next boot.

You can change the pio modes from the preferences program, that comes with the controller, you find it in the prefs drawer on your workbench.

if u get the latest version of the powerflyer drivers, they dont need the skip romupdate line in the startup-sequence.

If u bought the board second hand, elbox are really good and will still let u register it and give u support.

the latest drivers for the powerflyer are much more stable and let u change settinggs after the drivers have been reloaded, none of the scsi shift rubbish

Sorry, this is not totally true.
They decide on their own if you get support, and if they don't like the shape of your nose, they deny support.

For my second hand mediator, even within the legally assured warranty period they denied support and driver updates.

Even if they've never seen your nose what
they call "support" should be called
"discouraging future purchases" I didn't
base my purchase on my mood but they sure
seem to base the kind of help they offer
on their mood.

Looks like we have a little confusion here.  I am just using the 4XEIDE'99 Adapter which is a 4 way buffered interface.  This is NOT the Elbox Powerflyer IDE controller.

The Hard drive is a 2.5 inch drive with the 44 pin connecter.  The CD-ROM is a standard 40 pin IDE.  As a result they are both on different cables.

The setup worked great under OS 3.0 but the OS 3.9 Recovery disk I created did not work so I stupidly booted OS 3.0 from the harddrive and ran the OS 3.9 install.

I ran the 4xEIDE Prefs and I can see the drives but I don't get any Icons.

I have gone through the readme and everything including the setpatch line looks good in my startup script.

I registered with Elbox and as a result got a VERY prompt response.  Unfortunately it didn't help so I'll have to follow up with them when I get home tonight.

I've been away from the amiga for several years so I'm sure there is something simple I am missing here.

Welp, I got it to work. I think the problem was the fact that I was using CTRL-A-A to restart the computer.  I turned it off and let it rest for the night and now it works!

On top of that I was able to install AWEB and genesis so I'm writing this reply from my A1200.

Thanks for all of the replies!!!

I seem to be experiencing something similar with my current set-up, and was wondering if someone could offer some assistance.

Here's what I've done..

- I've partitioned a drive into 3, and have installed OS3.9 on one of them.

- I've then formatted the other 2 partitions so that I have DH0, DH1 and DH2 appearing.

- I've re-booted, and the partitions and their relevant icons show-up.

So far so good!

- Next, I installed 4xEIDE and re-boot.
- The machine powers back up and the CDROM drive whirrs into life. Excellent!
- Workbench loads-up. However, icons for DH0 and DH1 aren't showing up (DH2 appears though), and the stopwatch pointer appears.

If I uninstall 4xEIDE, turn the Amiga off for 30 seconds (to remove the software from RAM) and re-boot, my partitions return, and the Amiga works perfectly (but without cd rom support).

Can anyone suggest what I may be doing wrong here? I'm baffled.

Many thanks,

Rob
