Screen tweaking
« on: March 27, 2003, 01:44:30 PM »
On this A4K with a Commodore 1942 Monitor, I have a lot of display problems.

In short, the hardware commands does not allow me to make the WB cover the whole screen, instead I hav a blank border of 2 CM on each vertical side ! :-x

On the horizontal side, this is no better, I have to drag the screen down to see the titlebar :(

I understand that all this is "tweakable" using one of the multiple hacks in
/aminet/gfx/aga/

But there are so many ! What would be the safest, most complete solution for a vanilla A4K and his bi-sync monitor ??

Thanks

The safest, most complete solution: sell the 1942 to someone, then buy a real monitor and a scandoubler or a flicker fixer.

But since you already know about Aminet, please go there and search for 1942 (or 1940). You'll find a few related files there.

I have a 1942 too. Doesn't get much use.. Basically it's the 15kHz monitor for my A2000. I can't really recommend it to anyone.. :-(

The 1942 monitor is IMHO one of the best classic Amiga monitors!

If you're not running OS3.1 or higher, you should get the file 1942Patch.lha from Aminet. This includes a new overscan preferences binary and some other stuff.

The above patch is an old official release from Commodore - I believe it was shipped on disk with some of the 1942 monitors, so this should be the safest way.

Also use the "Overscan" button on the monitor, and don't forget to put VGAOnly in devs/monitors!

I'd also recommend you to try as far as possible to stay away from DBLPAL and DBLNTSC. Basically, the only flicker-free mode that is worth using is Multiscan: Productivity. Using only this and PAL is the best way to utilize your 1942 monitor. With the above patch you can get 656x495 pixels from the Multiscan driver, which should be enough for a 14" monitor.

If you're still not satisfied after that, get MonEd from Aminet which lets you edit most things in the monitor drivers. But beware - it can ruin the monitor if not used carefully!

@carls

Thank you VERY much for the light.

Heck, what I ultimately want is to make this monitor game-only. I'm investigating towards graphic cards for my 4000 to plug my Iiyama MT9017 and get set.

I only wanted to use the 1942 at its best, and your post pretty much makes my day  :-P
