“A solar-powered handbag designed by a student from Brunel University promises to make finding keys and other items at the bottom of a bag easier.
The handbag, dubbed Sun Trap, uses a solar cell attached to the outside of the bag to trap energy from sunlight.
The energy is stored in an internal battery which lights up the lining.
The lining is made from an electroluminescent material similar to that found in mobile phones and is lit up by the bag's zip which acts as a switch.
The bag goes dark when the zip is closed or after 15 seconds if it is accidentally left open.”

What about anti theft handbag from UK?

With investment from Sultan Of Brunei, embedded PowerPC 405 inside smart handbag, cellphone IC,  flexible/roll LCD screen / projector, wireless USB, foldable /virtual light keyboard, perhaps in the future it will be possible to run AmigaOS 4 on the smart handbag.

A fingerprint scanner designed to protect women from pickpockets has been unveiled in the UK. It fits any handbag and works through a small battery-powered device which stores pre-set fingerprints. When the "registered owner" wants to open the bag she passes her finger over the unit which, if it recognises the print, unlocks a latch on the front. A prototype of the Anti-Theft Handbag has been produced by its inventor, 23-year-old design graduate Louise Wilson. "I have been pickpocketed in the past and so have lots of my friends," said Ms Wilson, from Crowborough, East Sussex. "I had heard about biometric technology and wanted to apply it to something used in everyday life."
The scanner is approximately 5cm long and similar to those used on door entry security systems. An indicator flashes green when the fingerprint is recognised, or red when it is not. "People are fascinated by the bag," said Ms Wilson, a graduate in industrial design at Brunel University. "They think it is great that it's unique to the user, and the fact it's discreet."

Anti-theft handbags are nothing new, some of the fine ladies of my home county place a large brick in their hand luggage and use it as a club.

Why is it women never carry anything USEFULL in their purses? They're awlays filled with assorted napkins with lipstick stains, loose change covered with dried makeup, a few odd inedible certs also covered with dried makeup, wrappers, half a candy bar from 1992, keys to unknown locks, scraps of paper, dead ballpoint pens, etc...

If it were socially acceptable for me to carry a purse, I'd have all kinds of handy crap in there.

If men owned handbags it would be like this:

1) One bag would suffice for months, probably decades.
2) The contents of the bag would be as follows: Wallet, car keys, prophylactic (use by date 09/07/1998), phone, photograph of pet/car and the Topeak McGuyver multitool.
3) Once items were in the bag, they'd stay in the bad until such time as they were needed.

I've lost count of the amount of times my g/f has mounted a frenzied search for a mobile phone or set of keys that have turned up in a forgotten bag compartment.

Actually...

A good few years ago now me and Sioux were on the bus home from the city center when the bus' horn just started constantly for no reason.  The driver was banging on the wheel to try and nudge something so it would stop.

5 mins later it was still going, although it was a bit intermittent.  This old dear (must've been at least mid 60s) walked up to the driver and handed him a pocket knife.  He cut the wires and the horn stopped.

Possibly the only time ever that a woman has had something handy in her bag.  Must've been buried under the kitchen sink - it took her 5 mins to look for it!
