Hello Amigian's!!!!
« on: September 02, 2005, 12:11:17 AM »
I have finally got re-addicted to the Amiga again.. I tried to stay away and did so for 10 years :)  I just bought several systems on Ebay to get going again.. I got
an Amiga 1200 with 2 meg's Chip and 4 meg's fast with a 1200z co-proc and Kickstart 3.0 and Workbench 3.1.. I also picked up several 1084's..  I bought 3 of them but one was DOA :(  I also got 2 Amiga 2000's and one of them was DOA but the card's in it where good..  I want to see if I can get my 1200 on the internet.. I bought a PCMCIA 10B/T card and got the drivers..  Do you all think my system is fast enough to surf the net??

Thanks in advance..

Welcome to Amiga.org! :pint:

You've already gotten a nice collection there!  Pity about the DOA 1084 though  :-(

As far as getting your A1200 on the net, it's really not fast enough.  You can definately get it on a network (you'll need a TCP/IP stack, try Genesis or Miami), but without some more upgrading, it's really not fast enough for graphic web browsing.  Text based should be fine, but for graphic browsing at an acceptable rate, you're really looking at at least a 68040 accelerator card.  Realistically, you'd want a 68060 and an RTG graphics card (for which you'd have to tower it.)  Basically, it's more than fast enough for networking, but for net browsing, the AGA chipset isn't fast enough.  You can always give it a go, but I wouldn't attempt it without at least an 030 accelerator.  If you're looking for good accelerators, check out a Blizzard 1230 or a Blizzard 1260.
Hope that helps.  :-)

Yep thats a faq;

An A1200 on the web. To have it work in theorie you'll need 8MB Fastram added. A harddisk a TCP stack and some way to connect to the internet.

You want to use the PCMCIA to connect it. Therefor you cannot use the internal CPU because it can address only 4MB of fastram while the PCMCIA is operational. More fastram would disable your PCMCIA and away goes your connection.

Therefor the minimum accelerator card would be a full 68020 with 8MB fast.

Ofcourse more is better. I got acceptable results with an 68030@50Mhz in the past. But don't expect a speed deamon. It is not comfortable browsing. It is ok just for fun but if you want to browse there is only one option....get a PC ;-).

Even with a 68060 the chipset slows you down. And even with RTG your browser won't be up to modern day standarts. Really....do browsing with a PC.

Erno

I did some webbrowsing back in the day with only 2MB Chip and 4MB Fast RAM. You need a TCP/IP stack (check out AmiTCP since it's faster and uses less RAM than Miami), a Webbrowser with a small memory footprint (Aweb?) ... Anyways it would still be painfully slow :/
Slightly bored and severly confused..

heck i used to browse the web with a lowly a500 with 8 meg fast ram 1 meg chip. the most important thing is the more memory the better. the processor is secondary but the faster it is the more fulfilling it will be.

good luck to ya.
The only stupid question is a question not asked.

Because web-pages have so many graphics these days, surfing the web, even with an 68060, is not really a pleasure. I use AWeb on the workbench with 16 colors, so images and pictures look awful. Using more colors speed gets dead slow.
However, it's a miracle that it's überhaupt (don't know the english word for this) possible to surf the web with these old miggy's. And even wireless!

You Certainly can!!  YOu can use the A1200 with a Wireless PCMCIA card and take it to Starbucks!  just add a little LCD screen

I surfed the Web with an A600..now browsing pages can be slow...........but if y0ou save the links and disable the gfx.........you certainly can!

Most importanlty you can browse Aminet real easy and fast and download fast too on a plain A1200 with 4mb fast ram.

You can also use AOL Instant Messenger and AIM, Yahoo Instant Messenger and MSN Instant Messenger, as well as IRC and more!!!

Get the Amiga Versions: AmigaAIM and JabberWocky, AmIRC and WookieChat

Usually I find all the sites I need for My AMiga, such as Aminet and Back2TheRoots to download software and Games galore!  then save the pages in iBrowse or Aweb or Voyager Web browsers and walla.fast surfing.

Dont expect to see QUicktime movies or Flash anims though...you will need at least an 060 for that and a Gfx card and even then its not fast enough or actually have good enough browsers.

But Amigas are fun fun fun to surf the web with and chat.

You can even add Red Hat Linux and MacoOS on your Amiga............YES they have them both! RedHat is native but you  need a 68030 and lots of memory.

CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

Well my system is A1200T, Blizzard 1240, 16MB, AGA, Pcmcia ethernet, 8GB HD etc...

I discovered that with AGA web browsing (With Aweb) was really slow. Thats with this system.

On Amigathering (see www.amigathering.gr for more information) we have had a LOT of machines. I tried beyond AmigaONE and OS4, an A3000 with PicassoIV and 68060 cpu.

It was extremely fast on iBrowse!!!

As fast as my Athlon 2800+ (well it looked like that fast :P)
But is was fast to make me think that I dont need a PC. Well, i need it if I want to use java and Flash...

What I am saying is an amiga with RTG and 060 (or ppc) is fast enough for most sites. I have seen it with my own eyes  :-D
