elbox questions
« on: March 16, 2003, 12:30:11 PM »
Guys, I'm wondering how one could use the WB > 3.1 (I just got my 3.9 CD:) with even a (quite old but still *very* cool) voodoo3 using one of those tricky mediator cards :

http://www.buy.elbox.com/cgibin/shop?info=203M4DI&sid=78819134

I'm really interested in getting one for my A4K, only the price is currently stopping me :-P

Is there anyone here with a good experience of both fitting and *using* one of these in a DESKTOP A4K ? I mean,

# What is the most powerful GPU you can use with it ?

# How is the memory on the Graphic board used by WB/Intuition ? Do you end up with more "graphic mem" ?

# Is it really accelerating either DPaint or Brilliance ? I mean, what I want is the fastest 2D animation machine I can get my hands on.

# Is the TV-Out built into the V3-3000 working ?

# Is the latter genlockable ? And allowing for proper 15Hz operation ? (old ECS games on a TV, for start)

# How does it feel to use such powerful boards on a 040@25Mzh CPU ? This latter, although very subjective, is actually the most important one. Is the resulting computer really usable, and still cool ?

# Does it stay cool ? I'm only talking temperature here.

Thank you for the insight, those are serious questions. I know the Pegasos is around, I know it pretty much *rules*, or at least it will  (Pegasos2 coming, I heard from my retailer ?) but look, the 4K is still really a good graphic workstation. I will use it until, as africans say "the engine falls on the floor". I just love it.

peace 8-)

Firstly, join the unofficial mailing list. There's a whole heap of helpful people there.
The most powerful cards supported are the Voodoo3/4/5 cards.
With OS3.9 you can switch it to use 'other memory' so you preserve chip ram. My setup uses hardly any chip ram at all.
Not sure about DPaint, but Brilliance needs chip ram and don't work well (if at all) on promoted screens.
I don't recall anyone ever mentioning any sucess with built in TV out, however, many TV cards have support. By linking the Amiga's monitor output to the TV cards composite input, you can run 'difficult' programs like Brilliance and Scala in a window. HDD installable games work well this way.
Being able to use an Amiga with high resolution screens is so much better. I dare anyone to _want_ to go back to Hi-Res interlaced after using WB on say 1024x768x32@75Hz, it's a nightmare.
I've not seem any overheating problems. I've got my Voodoo3 overclocked to 182Mhz from the 166 standard and I've not had any problems at all.
