Running WinUAE for the first time
« on: June 11, 2005, 11:24:19 PM »
Hi All,
When I run WinUAE for the first time (and click OK on the Screen resolution and color depth TEST), I immediately click on Configurations and try to create a default configuration file (by typing a name in the Name field) and use the Save As... button to save this file.

Then I quit and restart WinUAE, to my surprise, none of the settings (Display, Sound, etc.) that I have customized and saved in that configuration file are saved, as a result I have to start all over again. (very frustrating)

Not only that, but I haved fed the ROM path with the correct Kickstart, yet still I get:

You need any following ROM(s)

- Kickstart v1.3 (A500,A1000,A2000) rev 34.5 (256k)
- Kickstart v1.3 (A3000) rev 34.5 (256k)

What do I have to do to save these settings?

What are YOUR steps when you run WinUAE for the first time (do you create your own UAE config files or load from a already made file (BTTR).)

I have also noticed that I need to load this config file eac h time I launch WinUAE, but I can most definitely remeber that last time I was running WinUAE (older builds), I never got the "You need the following ROM(s)" message. (nor when I used Amiga in a Box in conjuction with WinUAE)

Thanks for your help.
Kind Regards,
CodeHunter

Hi there!

Yeah, as wonderful as the new WinUAE releases are, I'm not such a fan of the quickstart stuff.  Fortunately it can be disabled on the 'Quickstart' page ('Start in quickstart mode').  After doing this, quit WinUAE then start it up again and you should find the behaviour returns to the old fashioned style.

Cheers,
James

Thanks so much for the response. I really appreciate it, the Amiga community is just like Linux one, maybe even better!

Much better, we are a dying breed and we need more fresh blood.  Thats why we are so helpful. :-)

Amiga.org is the Royston Vasey of the Amiga world.

Even with QuickStart OFF, none of the customization gets saved, why?

Thanks!

Strange.  Well, when you enter a name for the configuration file then click 'Save', is the new configuration still there when you restart WinUAE?

Winuae does some quirky things in its configurayion menu.  Once you have given your configuration a name and saved, it should appear in your list of configurations.  Now to boot with this configuration you have to select it AND  load before booting: it will not load it just because you selected it.  The other quirky thing is puting uaescsi.device in the miscellaneous section instaed of the drives section, which took me ages to find and select: without this you have no cdrom support

Thanks. It was the launching WinUAE and LOADING the config file that was giving me all these headaches.

I simply deleted all of the config files that I had made (and the ones from BTTR) and just followed what you mentioned here:

It works like a charm, thanks again!

Note that WinUAE will always load default.uae at startup, so you may wish to rename your configuration file for extra convenience.

This is what I did with AIAB for example...
