Things to do to an A2000
« on: April 27, 2005, 03:24:14 AM »
Ok! dig this....
I've got an A2000. I got this from Doomy before I knew who Doomy was and it only took me four months to get it. The good news is that A2000 is everything that he said it was or wasn't. :-o

Anyway, this is a second A2000 for me and I'd like to hop this one up some. There isn't much to it right now so I figure the sky is the limit!

It has no floppy drives, no keyboard, no mouse (I can use the ones off my other A2000 for now) and kickstart 1.2 rom. I do have some misc. hardware lying around and I'm also not afraid to build things when needed. I have an AdSCSI interface, SCSI Drives, Opalvision card, A2286 bridge board, external floppies, etc.

What kind of hardware and software things can I do to this machine to make it bit more up to date (in the Amiga definition of time). What kickstarts and os's could I max out with.

Look up my A2000T.lha file on aminet if you'd like some hacking ideas. I made quite a mess of that machine, but it was cool when it was done. :)

Depends on how much you want to invest and what you are planning to do with it after you have upgraded it.

The bare minimum for me is:
- dual internal 3.5" floppy;
- 2 MB fastram;
- internal SCSI harddisk (any size);
- KS 1.3 or higher.

With the above config you have a very nice gaming rig, but it's not able to run the more demanding and/or 'recent' Amiga software. For this, you have to add:
- turbocard (the fastest you can get);
- more ram (preferably on turbocard);
- a flickerfixer and/or videocard;
- 2 MB chipmem;
- Kickstart 3.1.

With this, you can run OS3.9, a nice update to older Amiga OS versions (especially if you've only been used to OS1.x).

On top of that, you can also add more stuff like:
- networkcard (X-Surf?);
- soundcard (Delfina?);
- cd-romdrive/USB-card/whatever.

After that, you have a pretty much maxed out 2000. It will most likely cost you bigtime, though. You will have a very cool 2000, but it will still not be able to keep up with a current day pc...

All in all, it depends on the amount of money, time and effort you want to invest in maxing it out.
Life sucks. Then you die. Then they throw mud in your face. Then you get eaten by worms. Be happy it happens in that order... My Amiga 1200

My upgrade recommendation:
replace the barrel battery!
3.1 ROM (maybe DKB rom switcher for old games)
FatAgnus 8272 w/ 1MB chipram hack (depends on motherboard)
8373 SuperDenise IC
Amber Board or Microway Flickerfixer in video slot
GVP or Phase 5 68030+ accelerator w/16MB ram and SCSI-II controller
ZII graphics card (PicassoII+ or GVP Spectrum 28/24)
4GB scsi-2 harddrive
4x scsi internal cdrom (R/RW drive)
Fast serial board or ZII ethernet (a2065, XSurf, Ariadne)
ethernet hub connection or 56K modem for dialup
ZII memory board w/ 4MB (just to boost 16-bit system ram).
17" Sony Trinitron monitor

Welcome to the A2000 owners club!

For a laugh, tear out the insides, fit PC parts in it, have it boot into WinUAE, and sell it back to Doomy telling him it's now got an '060 ;-)

Ahem, if you can find the right parts, and have the moolah, the sky is the limit.  A basic setup for games would be easy and fun though :-)

AT BridgeBoard + ISA Ethernet board

Are you able to share this ethernet between the AT and Amiga sides?

Also, Please let us know how you make out with your homemade kickflash.

Yes, Im using the ISA ethernet in the amiga side.

Both kickflash and AT ethernet are available in aminet.

Mmm if you wanna get 16 bit slots from the 8 bit isa slots in the A2k, you only have to complete the 8 bit connector to 16, by add the rest of the connector not present in the board by default.Just solder it. Thats it.

Gut it all save for the powersupply and stuff it full of christmas lights then run it with the case off.

Would be worthless as a computer but it sure would be purty to look at...

  :-D

I'm looking to set up my extra almost box stock 1.3 A2000 as a signal generator/drive bay for my A4000 VT Flyer.

hmmm   The xmas light thing does sound kinda cool...
