Argh! Dammit, why can't I add a hardfile!
« on: February 28, 2005, 07:05:35 AM »
This is driving me nuts.  I'm currently using WinUAE 0.9.92 + a 3.1 ROM image + WB3.1 and I cannot add a freaking hardfile!  It's not like the problem I had before - the hardfile just ain't showing up.  There's no additional disk appearing when I start winuae.  Just the floppy images for the virtual floppy drives with ADF images.

What in the hell am I doing wrong?!

I struggled with this for ages - trouble is the instructions you get with WinUAE are poor.  Search for some better ones on the net. I cannot remember with WinUAE in front of me... sorry.

Until then, try downloading AIAB and either use or reverse engineer that OR tick 'add PC drives at startup', save the config and you should get access to you PC HD on the WB screen...

Good Luck!

Hardfiles can be difficult if you don't know what you are doing. I suggest you use the file system option instead, that way you don't need to remember the geomety of your drive if your UAE config goes kaput... and it also gives you an easy way to get files between UAE and Xindows :-D

See, that's the killer.  The last time I screwed around with WinUAE there was nothing to it.  Create a hardfile and then bang, away I go.  It showed up and there were no problems.  Now it won't.  And I'd prefer to use the hardfile.

Hey B00TDisk,

I was having the same problem, in that it was just not as simple as the older versions of UAE.   Anyway,  Just click "Add Hardfile" under the hard drives section in WinUAE.  at the bottom of the screen, specify a size for your drive then click "Create", give it a name and save or whatever.  Then, you'll need to boot from your Workbench 3.1 disk.  You might notice when you boot into workbench that your newly created Hard disk is present, but labeled as "Ndos" or somthing.   Use the "Format" tool located on the Workbench 3.1 disk, under the "System" folder.  this will allow you to format your new disk and you should be good to go.

Hope this helps!!

Jeremy

You do need to treat the hard file just a real disk, so I don't think it will show up under Workbench until after you've used hdtoolbox to read the drives configuration and write out a RDB. Try executing "SYS:Tools/HDToolBox uaehf.device" from Workbench. Read the config, partition the drive, and save. After that, you should see the new drive(s) in Workbench. Format them and you're done.
