A4000: Two internal floppy drives?
« on: March 24, 2005, 07:01:53 AM »
I installed another Chinon drive in my A4000 030 computer today.  It is a PC 1.44 drive that I modded to work with Amigas in 880k mode.  It works fine but when I have it set as DF1: Any drive access to either drive, both LEDs come on!  (Drive works fine alone in any Amiga) This normal for a A4000?  Or is it because its a PC drive.  I set the jumper for DF1: 880k on the motherboard.  I had to finagle the DS0/DS1 on the drives due to the twist on the floppy ribbon cable.

It seems I found my answer!  Now to figure out how to fix!

---

Many (perhaps most) A4000s were shipped with improperly-wired floppy
cables. These cables had wires 3-5 twisted, instead of wires 4-6. These
cables will work fine for a single drive, but will not properly connect a
second drive. To use two drives that are both jumpered the same, the floppy
cable should have both wires 4-6 and 10-12 twisted. A cable with wires 4-6
twisted will require the drives to be jumpered as DS0 and DS1.

OK I don't think its healthy to keep replying to myself. LOL  But seriously does any one know how to get two floppy drives working with the defunct floppy ribbon cable?  Any hack I can do or do I need to get a new cable?  Where can I get one?  I assume a PC one will not work.  Thanks.

Modding a cable shouldn't be too difficult. The connectors are pressed on the cable, if you carefully lift the clips at the sides you can slide up the top part (the one opposite the connecting side). You'll see the cable is pressed on a row of hooks, you can just wedge them out and push them on other pins. Done this often enough...
