Well, while I wait on my 8029 nic to arrive, I continue to mess with the prometheus with some success. If I move the card to any slot other than the one next to the video slot, picasso96mode can't see it. If I move it next to the video slot, it appears in picasso96mode when I go to "attach to". But doing so has no effect. The "modes" section of picasso96mode all ways has all of the config setting greyed out and picasso96mode always tells me ALL of the possible video modes are unsupported and would I like to diable or delete the choices. I figure this has to be some thing to do with the way picasso recognises prometheus or the way I need to set up the files for my S3virge card. Exactly how do I use the .chip files? I can't find any documentation on these. And I still want to mess  with openpci if someone can help me figure out how to fire it up. I have all the files in place, now what? I know it's supposed to be buggy, but even if I get the amiga to crash while using it, that would be progress. Right now the ami almost acts as if the prometheus doesn't exsist. The prominfo util shows my pci cards so I know that's not entirely true.

Sigh.... Once again picasso96mode sees no board to attach to. I've enjoyed digging in to the guts my my old ami again, but I must say the lack of doc support on prometheus is bumming me out.

I have the same problem as you, but I have an EC030 processor, so I was thinking maybe it's the lack of MMU, and the same setup worked when I had a Cyberstorm 060.

I have an EC030 too, and I had problems with my Prometheus until I turned off the CPU data cache. Of course, that won't do much for overall system performance, but you might want to try it.

@Plaz

You don't use .chip files. When you use the install script they go into a sub folder in libs ( libs/prometheus IIRC).

In CLI try:
version prometheus.library
version picasso96.library
Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!

They are located where they are supposed to be then.
And prometheus.library version = 2.5
I don't have a picasso96.library but I do have a
picasso96API.library = 2.3 Is that the one you mean?
I've had a bit more success by renaming the prometheus
monitor and libs:prometheus both respectivly to picasso96.
Then I'm able to start the monitor, run picasso96mode,
PVS and findcard with some results. (Faking out the picasso utils)
But still no display from the card. On I trudge.
I've tried digging up more docs one the
interworking on picasso96, but I guess I shouldn't be
suprised that little exsist besides the source code.
IF I ever get it all working, I promise to do a proper
document on installing an S3Virge with prometheus since
none seems to exsist so far.

@Trooper

Some how I missed my reply to your question....
Yes I did alter all tooltype settings so that I receive
all "OK" messages now when I run the monitor.
And it's probably contributed to the limited responses
I'm getting from the picasso utils now.

YEAH!

S3VirgeGx Video Card in the Prometheus!

Still lots of mode and settings to mess with and test,
but this really brightens my week. Docs to come later
when I'm done playing around and get it stable.

Well after testing a couple of other video modes, the amiga locked up. I rebooted and I'm back to where I started. No video. Hard to understand since it was working and I didn't make any config changes. I was only choosing a new mode and hitting "Test" in picasso96mode. I don't get any more errors but there ya go. I'm starting to beleive the S3Virge driver needs a re-write. Well back to the docs and testing. (Does anyone care any more ;)

@Plaz

Try a Voodoo3 card instead of the Virge; the graphics are better and it is stable.

I'm on the hunt for a voodoo card now. Red confirms that
there is a problem with the driver working on a virgeGX,
while it runs find with a virgeDX card.
I've taught myself a lot by working this dead end though,
and I may be the only person ever to get a GX to display at all. :-)
I was interested in working on pci drivers. Starting by
figuring out why a DX and GX are different should be
an easier place to start learning.
