ISP stuff
« on: February 10, 2003, 11:59:21 AM »
Hello

I`m currently using BT Anytime. A service which sucks bigtime. I get 150 hours of free internet before I have to change numbers and use another account which requires cash. This is so annoying as everything you use the net theres always the thought that this could be your last hour before you start having to pay.

I live in the UK (if you can`t read under my avatar :-D), and its a dificult area for this kind of thing. I can`t seem to be able to get broad band here, so thats not an option. I just want a cheap service which will allow me to go on without wondering if I`m going to be paying the next time I reconnect. Is there an ISP which doesn`t have any area limitations?

Thanks

There is one ISP which does not cut you off at all and has no restrictions but as you have guessed the ISP is AOL which forces the user to use their computer taking over software,

As for broadband, if that comes in your area i hope it is not those lying bastards NTL with its so called "UNLIMITED" service or should that be its "NEW LIMITED" service.

@nick

Try http://www.onetel.net

I use them for my ISP and I have to say they're  very good. Very little problems and I do connect for a long time. I mean, I definately get my monies worth of internet time  :-)

Cheers,

J

Broadband from ntl: is unlimited as in its "always on" (No need to dial).
Why do you think they have over half a million customers with cable modems thats over 90 percent of the UK broadband market.

Why does ntl: carry AOL's traffic if they are so crap ?

You obviously dont have a clue about telecomms so ssshhhh please.

ntl's network is not as big as BT's but saying that ntl: doesn't have to beable to provide a phoneline by law.
BT does (stems from GPO days). BT has been around with one name or another for decades.

And why are they lying ?

Please try and put a positive adult aguement without swearing.

Maybe instead of defending NTL you should visit

Here or here or here

or any of the following

Its changing to a LIMITED service, yes LIMITED ie heavy users get warnings and maybe kicked off service, so much for wonderfull  NTL broadband service,

NTL have been advertising that people can try and "break their cable modem" by constant downloading,

JurassicCamper i would like to know what you would define unlimited as?

I see unlimited as having no restrictions which NTL clearly now has restrictions  :-( .

@Paul_Gadd
you know the only people who _really_ need over 1GB a day are those who down load lots of RAR files from newsgroups (and I'm sure you of all people  know what I'm on about ;-)
Expect all ISP's to follow suit really soon. This will be the only effective way to combat piracy of video/film.  The people banging on about DRM will be encouraged by this. I suspect that many ISP's will go the same way and maybe even go to a tiered system, similar to the GPRS model where you pay more for a band of MB's. I'm suprised really that broadband suppliers didn't come up with this from the start.

while i dont agree they have done this, there is a reason. A Network can only switch so much traffic.
Photonic SDH on local rings is already used to get 20x the amount traffic for the UBRs out of the fibre network.  The majority of users will never exceed 1gig.

There are hundreds of FTP sites and Direct connect hubs using dns2go around. These are clearly breech of policy. If you want to host sign up for a business modem.

If you bother to read the back of the sheet of paper you sign (Contract) just above wear you sign your name...... go and fetch it...... T&C's subject to change without warning.
ntl: reserves the right etc.
Dont agree... Dont sign... simple as that.

Didn't you want an X86 os4 so you could download that for free as well ?

Provide proof for that statement as it clearly is not true at all, i have said i want to see a x86 version of AmigaOS and willing to pay for it,

You claimed NTL provides UNLIMITED service i proved NTL provides LIMITED service so that proves NTL provides LIMITED service full stop, all the qualifications in the world is not going to prove NTL provides UNLIMITED service,

As for the abusers bit, what a load of bollox, thats all providers cry out "Abusers", people use what they pay for simple as that, i pay for the 600k service and i will use it 24/7 if i wish, FFS even NTL advertise the service for 24/7 use.

@jd997uk

Yeah true, all providers are going to rip people off badly in the future because they know they can and get away with it, as for downloading Rars LOL i love those rar and par files,

As for the lies from NTL customer support people http://simon.poshcoffee.com/ntl.mp3

No it isn't. Cable has nearer 60% of the broadband market. Feel free to check OFTEL figures.

Because it's cheap. NTL's prices are not controlled in the same way as BT's.

Ah. An intelligent counter argument.

No, so they can target thier market more effectively.
Still, it hasn't helped their current financial situation.

BT does (stems from GPO days). BT has been around with one name or another for decades.

And being around for years is a bad thing?

And why are they lying ?

In particular, people are upset at being encouraged to take up their 1Mb service, only to find the goalposts moved after they had done so.

Of course broadband is 'always on', that doesn't
make it 'unlimited'...that's just marketing. A
1gb limit makes it limited, not unlimited
becasue it's 'always on' like all broadband..:P

AOL are crap,  i know somebody who has been ticked off by them for over use and they sent him a warning told him if he used it to much they would charge him extra, plus they reserve the right to cut you off after 4 hours so there is restriction with AOL, if you live in a cabled area get blue yonder dial up or get  freeserve, i know they have a 2 hour cut-off but you can redial anytime without worring about over use.

@nick

glad to hear it.

since i recommended them, I've been having some problems with them!  Something to do with DNS I think! Seems to be on the mend now tho.

Cheers,
