Amiga 1200 Accelerator
« on: January 12, 2005, 09:35:04 AM »
Hi everyone,

I haven't posted on here for a while, mainly because of University exams, etc, but also because I've been fiddling with my A1200.   :-) The thing is, that after experimenting with it a bit, I can't really get the majority of my games to run from the HD using WHDLoad with just the 2mb Chip.  So, I'm asking this - What should I look at in terms of price and reliability for upgrading my 1200, bearing in mind that I'll really only use it to play games with WHDLoad, although I'd like to install OS 3.9

If anybody has a card for sale, let me know, because I am interested as well.  Thanks in advance for any advice  :-)

for full compatibillity get a 68030 card WITH MMU ... fpu really does not matter... I used to have a MTEC 68030/28 + 8MB fast, and both whdload games/os3.9 were wonderfull... now with the 1260 I have found some games not working, but I really don't care much... I still have the 030 as a backup unit though  :-)

@Darklight

Well, most of your testing could have been avoided if you had read the docs for the games you have installed, as the docs mentiones the ram requirements. Almost everyone requires fast ram, and since you only got chip ram you haven't matched the requirements, and that's the reason why you can't get most of the games to work.

Only for gaming the Blizzard 1230 would be best since no drivers or anything is needed in order to use the card, so it's actually just plug and play.

@Keropi

Which WHDLoad games don't run on 060?

well, I just remember a couple, like ab3d, sabre team ... really I cannot recall much, because I was just batch testing games... some where stuck, controls did not work and some even hanged the system... I found about 10 of these games, from title letters R and S (I have almost every whdload game organised in directories according the name) ... just what I tried on my system... it is normal I think for a 060 cpu to have probs, especially in older whdload games... nowdays all installs created, work on 060...

Well, isn't the fun in testing?  I actually read the docs, and the majority, if not ALL of the games I've tried to run with WHDLoad require less than 2mb ram, total.  Seeing as I don't have fast ram, I figured that it would be worth trying to run them without fast ram, but still with a total of 2mb outside of Workbench.  Anyway, thanks for the tip on the Blizzard.

@Darklight

I can see your point of view, but it wouldn't have helped even if you had 8 MB of chip ram, since chip ram and fast ram is far from the same :-)
