Amiga 4000T Questions ...

Hi Folks,

Long time, no type. I have been looking at getting an A4000T, I am confused though about the specifications. Some hardware places list it as a SCSI machine, others say it has IDE, but, I can't seem to find difinitive information saying which it really has.

Also, any comments on the 4000T pertaining to whether or not this is a good system to own would be greatly appreciated.

It has both SCSI and IDE.
And although it is a big ol' lump, it is my opinion that it is the finest classic Amiga. If you can get one, then by all means do so.

Other minor details:

The A4000T differs from the A4000D in several ways:

1) the Zorro slots are not on a daughter board.
2) there shouldn't be any battery damage because the AT A4000T came with a coin battery, not the horrible leaky barrel one.
3) There are three small daughter boards known as modules. The ports module is connected to the mobo by means of two ribbon cables. The other two modules (the AV and disks module) are daughter boards of the mobo and can be replaced if damaged. You just have to find them (I got two modules from Vesalia recently).
4) There is no 2mb SIMM for the chip ram, it is on the mobo in SMD form.
5) There's no external floppy drive port

Couple of things to check before you get the Miggy:

1) The claw clamps on the bezel section. These can be damaged if the previous owner has been ham-handed while taking the thing off to get at the drive chassis.

2) Make sure the floppy works (this might seem obvious, but it is very important)

And...did I say get the A4000T already?

this might be obvious, however, check that it is not an A4000 Desktop witch has been towered. (the towered desktop version does not have a SCSI onboard).

Where are you getting it from, and what are the specs (is it in original spec or is there an upgraded CPU board inside?)

Actually, this will be a first. SoftHut, has actual Amiga Technologies A4000T's which are factory new. They are quite pricey, but, I think that it would be a good investment with some of my tax returns. I usually buy used, and I have ended up with junk. I wanted to buy an A1, but, to be honest, I am a "Classic-Amiga" guy at heart, an A1 just wouldn't be the same.

So, buying new, I should not have to worry too much (fingers crossed ...) about the condition of the box, plus, I get a something like a warrenty with it.

Anyhow, if anyone knows where I can get a new A4000T other than SoftHut, I would love to hear about it.

Well, that's the scary part. This would be my very *first* brand new Amiga. I have owned about 20 Amiga's and every single one was used.

The price is really high, $1299.00 for an A4000T with 6MB, no hd, kb and mouse.

I wish I could find a new one cheaper than this, but, I have had no luck. Seems like an awful lot to pay for a system that has an 040/25, but, in comparison, if you tried to buy that machine a few years ago, it would be $3,000 or something close to that.

Yeah. But like you said, it's new. Not something that's been beat around or hacked on. However, I've seen a couple used Amiga Tech 4000T with a moderate amount of expansion go for around $500 on Ebay.

I should have waited till I had some more $ saved. Instead I ended up with a 4000D with RTC issues, a dead monitor  (making claim against shipping co.), a box load of original in the box graphics and 3D software, and a yet to be received box containing the Toaster software, OS install disks and other Lightwave related material (making claim against shipping co.).      :pissed:    

There's gotta be a moral to this story...   :-D

I don't know what the conversion was back in 1996. All I know is I was very light in the wallet after that.
