Apollo voltage-regulator modules

Hi.

Does anyone know if the voltage-regulator modules from the Apollo1260/Viper1260 cards can be used on the Apollo4060 cards?

The reason why I am asking this is because a friend of mine got an Apollo4040 card which ofcourse doesnt have the voltage-regulator module and I have a spare 68060. It would be great to be able to combine that card with the 68060.

I would think that as long as the regulators ar pin compatible, they should work. I can't say for sure without knowing the part numbers of the devices they use, but most voltage regulators work pretty much the same, the main differences being the voltage and current handling capicity.

It is actually a little card that presumably should contain a voltage-regulator and some support-components like a few capacitors. I dont know the details as I have only seen the back of it. Check it out how it looks on the 1260 on  this picture (the little card to the right of the 68060).

Keep in mind that just obtaining the voltage regulator and putting an 060 instead of 040 (plus proper jumpering to 060 modes) won't work as you need an 060 specific eprom as well. The one on the card at the moment is for 040 only. :-(

As long as it is pin compatible it should work. I can't be 100% sure without looking
at the actual schematics for the boards, but the module looks like a basic voltage
regulator with filtering. As the boards are made by the same company, they should be
the same. I would probably try it if it were mine, but I wouldn't  want to say to
someone else that yes it would definitly work, and cause them to damage thier board,
and like x56h34 said, you will still need the 060 rom.

the funny is that those circuit, is done with a TIP 32C ( PNP 3 Amp transistor) and not with a voltage regulator IC!

Strange 5>3.3 v  converter.

There does not appear to be much in the Apollo 040 rom, take a look (Tek Hex format)

From what I can see, it is just used for Auto config stuff.

It should be possible to make your own regulator board up. You could use a 3.3V LDO regulator.

The Apollo voltage converters are all the same, so you can exchange them among cards with no problem.

The TIP32 circuit is in fact the Motorola application circuit. The 68060 takes a lot of current, and most regulators can't deliver that much with such a low drop voltage.

The circuit is *very* precise. Measure it in any state of operation, and the output is 3.30 volts (yes, THAT precise).

The Voltage regulation is set by the TL431 adjustable voltage reference. The whole system is not that efficient (upto 65%) but does the job.

On the Apollo 040, you have to remove 2 jumper links and solder an appropriate connector into the group of 4 and 3 solder pads near the AMD MACH device. Probing the card with the power on, will reveal which is 5V and which is 0V.
