Amiga 1200 - is it worth it
« on: December 31, 2004, 02:58:50 AM »
Right now i got a Amiga 600HD, Amiga 500 and one Philips CM8833-II monitor. Anyway, i'm planning to sell the Amiga 600HD including the CM8833-II buy a Amiga 1200 whith a Commodore 1942 monitor.
To be more exact...this one...

http://www.nappet.se/showad.php?id=21798

It would cost me about 140,52 USD. (950SEK)

1. Is it worth it?
2. Is there any good games that does support the AGA chip? 3. Where can i found upgrades for it? Is it hard to install a HD?
4. What are the differance between the Commodore 1942 monitor and the Philips CM8833-II monitor?
5. What res can i use on the 1942 monitor whithout flicker?

If you have a PC you might want to buy the AmigaForever emulator before you buy the Amiga 1200:

You'll have no techinal problems with HDD's, or monitors etc that way.

1. 950SEK is a bit over what I would've payed for one but it's not outrageous. It's deffinitly worth it compared to the A500 or A600.

2. Short answerr.. yes ofcause!

3. Most places that sell Amiga upgrades have A1200 upgrades, check out GuruMeditation, GGS-Data or Vesalia. 2.5" HD's slide in just as easy as on the A600... and that is easy.

4. Short answerr, the Philips CM8833-II monitor take 15.57Khz screenmodes where's the Commodore 1942 is a bisync monitor taking 15.6-15.8KHz and 27.3-31.5KHz.

5. Same as the Philips monitor... Interlace create flicker no matter what, unless you have a Scandoubler/flickerfixer installed.

1) Oh, yes.  AGA isn't technically any faster than ECS, but the 1200's memory architecture is better which does give you more screen speed, especially once you put in some Fast RAM.

2) I only know about the glut of AGA "enhanced" games that will work fine on OCS/ECS.  I assume you don't have a PC or have a crummy one.  Otherwise, emulation is a good idea.

3) Why not transfer your 600 hard drive to the 1200?  Many laptop hard drives will install with the correct bracket and cable, although some come with proprietary connectors, like my brother-in-law's Dell laptop.  A 600 HD should fit right in a 1200.

4 + 5) No comment.  :-)

It's definitly worth it, but you might want to get an acceleratorcard to go with it. GGS-Data (gotta love them) got the Viper 1230 for around 1200:- at the moment which will suffice for just playing HD-installed games. (WHDLOAD requires acceleration as far as I know...)

Otherwise just do as someone else suggested, buy Amiga Forever 6 and launch it on a PC. It's really good, not the same feeling as sitting in front of a REAL amiga, but close enough. :) And portable, if you get a laptop.

ooooh, and get the game Banshee AGA.. its beautiful and immensely fun! :D

Thx for the awnsers. I already got Amiga Forever, but i don't like it. The only thing i like with it is Amiga Explorer. Is isn't the same thing as sitting with the Amiga and putting in all these floppies and looking on the small monitor. =P
Maybe i buy the Amiga 1200 after all. I don't think someone gonna buy it for a while...he still have it...and that note is over 2month old...=)
