Things Are Getting Messy!
« on: December 29, 2004, 11:49:09 PM »
I'm pretty far into tweaking and customizing my OS 3.9 Environment. Having made it safely past a few serious roadblocks, I'm now upgrading and enabling many of my device drivers and software packages for the catweasel, VarIO, and Delfina cards. In the process of doing this, I've actually found better and later versions of drivers for some devices (such as the VarIO), and complete replacements for others, such as when I swapped out the CyberGraphx/Cybervision software for Picasso96. The result of all this has been software sitting on my Amiga that is no longer being used, or, needs to be removed before I can upgrade to the latest version (VarIO). My question: Is there a reliable uninstall routine available to Amiga users? Manually hunting down key files to disable an installation is quickly becoming tedious, and the alternative, just leaving them sit there 'taking up space' is not acceptable, either. :hammer:

Have you tried using the Find/Search function in OS 3.9?
That should make finding those keyfiles a bit easier

I use snoopDos for hunting the files to delete.

I run the old program before installing a new one, check what files it uses and then remove them... :) Doesn't always show all files to delete though, but better than nothing. ;)

SnoopDOS is good for finding files but is there any need to use it if AmigaOS 3.9 has the facility built in?

Well, if you don't know the name of the file, yes.

Do you still have the install logs? I find them pretty useful for tracking down where files may have been dumped during an install.

kinda late now.
But I use this useful trick.

I use the setdate command to have all my workbench files datestamp changed to 1/1/2000 00:00:00
example: setdate sys:#? 01-01-00 00:00:00 all
Now when I do an install it is easy to see what directories and files have been changed.
I then put comments on those files as what program installed them. This way it is easy to track down what belongs to what.

you can also put this command in a text file use iconx as the defualt tool so all you have to do is double click the icon to run it.

I think that it's quite easy do uninstall programs in AOS
even if you don't know exactly what's been installed.

The obvious is to delete the drawer where the programs are
*if* there are any. Check libs: for libraries and envarc:
for text-files. If the later aren't removed nothing will
happen but why have useless files? ;-)

That's what I like about AOS, the file-structure. Everything
is so obvious. Cybergraphx got libraries in libs, monitor
driver in sys:devs/monitors, prefs-programs in sys:prefs,
and the settings are saved in envarc:cybergfx (or a similar
name).

Another option is to check the archive/disk/CD for files.
They are usually put in dirs like c, libs and so on allready
so it's easy to see what have been installed where.

And yes, the log-option can be usefull too but I don't like
to have log-files on my HD ;-)
