What to do...What to do...
« on: December 18, 2004, 07:43:06 AM »
Well it's been along time; six years since I touched an AMIGA (way too long!!!).  I just can't take it anymore I must own one again.

So, I have my eye on a couple of systems : an A4000 and a A3000.  Although, I can't make up my mind.  I used to own an A2000 I didn't have much of any opertunity to play around with the other systems.

Sooo... I have a bunch of questions...

Question #1-

Which A is the best to have 3000 or 4000?

#2 -

Will the new OS4.0 work on either of these machines?  If so how well?

#3 -

Is OS4 worth it for an old fashioned Amigan? Or should I use OS3.9?

#3 -

What roms are needed to run OS3.9 and OS4?

#4 -

Will a PC monitor look decent on either of these machines or should I stick with a true Amiga monitor?  If I use a PC monitor where could I find these scan converter cards?

I think that's it for now...I can't wait unitl I'm using workbench again (the only logical GUI I have ever used).

THANKS for the help...I really feel at home here!!!

Well i've only use an A500 and A1200..

Currently have the A1200 here..

OS4 will not work on a classic Amiga, you need an AmigaOne for that. OS3.9 with BoingBag 2 installed is the latest you can go.

You'll want at the very least 16meg of ram, 32 preferred.

3.1 roms are needed for OS3.9

As for hooking up a PC monitor.. Yes, do that, with the Multiscan Productivity screenmode in the Storage/Monitors/ folder, you will need to use a TV or old monitor while setting that up though.

You can make the converter yourself, there are diagrams on de.aminet.net/ if you know where to search (can't think of anything specific at the moment)

[Edit, look at these URL's

ftp://de.aminet.net/pub/aminet/hard/hack/ami2vga.lha
ftp://de.aminet.net/pub/aminet/hard/hack/VGA_Hack.lha

You'll need WinRAR to extract the .lha's and an ILBM picture viewer for the pics.

@DMC12

If you want OS 4 then you should consider the µA1-C .   :-D

Something for the future. . .  8-)

I've got an A4000, and I have to say it's an excellent machine. If you want AGA support for some games/demos, then get the A4000, else get the A3000 (nice & slim).

Runs on both, but you have to get a PPC accelerator card, in order to do so. Should run with no problems, as if you had a 3.x (just faster, PPC!).

Yes it worths, it resolves some problems (that's the reason to have an OS), plus it mantains the well known feeling (if you have already been using amiga, you'll use it easy).

What roms are needed to run OS3.9 and OS4?

ROM v3.1, plus the ROM Update files (included with the OS).

Get a nice PC monitor! A3000 scandoubles the PAL/NTSC screens with its inbuilt scandoubler/flickerfixer, A4000 can do this with an internal module (in the Video slot), or externaly.
Both machines can have a DblPAL/DblNTSC monitor setup (31KHz) using the OS Prefs/Screenmode (Storage/Monitors).
A RGB->VGA convertor plug (to directly connect to a PC-VGA monitor) is included (should ;-) ) with these Amigas.

Yeap!
I think your best choice is to buy an A4000.
I was working for years with my A4000T with OS3.9 with Boing Bang 2 with no problems at all. Of course you need kickstart rom 3.1. The only bad thing about A4000T (as mentioned from mr.cass) is the size of the tower! Is too huge for a normal desktop...
Anyway, first of all, I was changed a lot of A's, 500, 500+, 1200, 3000, but the A4000T is my last love from A's serries!

Take a fun!
