Installing AmigaOS 3.9 ?
« on: February 17, 2003, 11:40:27 AM »
I've blown the dust off my Amiga 1200 rebuild project, and now want to throw AOS3.9 on to it properly.

Obviously once I've overcome the hardware issues of connecting a CD-ROM to the IDE channel, whats the steps I have to follow to get it installed?

Presume here, that the harddisk is blank with no software or partitions on it.

Cheers.

1) Install OS 3.1 from the 3.9 CD or from floppies.
2) OS 3.9 Pre-Install (reboot after)
3) OS 3.9 Main install
4) OS 3.9 BB1 (Boing Bag) - bug fixes and enhancements
5) OS 3.9 BB2.

OK then - you'll need a set of OS3.1 disks and a copy of something like atapi.device and CacheCDFS, because all the IDE CD drivers are on the OS3.9 CD
:-D

Once you've got those installed you'll be able to use the CD to do the steps above.

One small problem - OS3.1 isn't actually on the OS3.9 CD. It's on the 3.5 CD, which is where the confusion arises.

Don't make same mistake I did and trust the the information which 3.1 gives about the hard disk. I trusted, and few weeks later when I was doing new partitions I noticed that the OS saw only 8GB drive instead of 40GB what it should have been.. grr. So I had to re-install the RDB on it and destroy everything I got together at that point.

Anyways, that was my bad for not checking it at the first place.
Before you judge me take a look at you....

Yes, if your hard disk is big and not previously
formatted, a clean 3.9 install can be a bugger on a 1200. A spare HD comes in handy here, or you may have to rig a special boot disk with some more modern software to recognize and format/ partition the drive properly.

Use OS 3.1 to boot the Miggy, then use the OS3.9 CD to create a boot disk.  When Yoiu're ready, boot using the OS3.9 disk and CD, it should find the true size of the HD with no problems.

I use a smaller 520MB driveon the built in scsi for my boot drive. I use that for workbench and nothing else. I have a 60GB drive formated and use it for Work: which works aout nice.  Get the original smaller drive working with 3,1 and the use it to get 3,9 upgraded onto it. Then you can get the larger drive slaved and make it work.

BTW ( 2) OS 3.9 Pre-Install (reboot after) <--What is that?

When installing OS 3.9 for the first time, there is a "Pore-Install" step that must be done before the main installation process.  This pre-install step, I believe, copies newer versions of workbench.library and icon.library files (and maybe some other stuff) onto your system first.  Then it tells you to reboot the computer before continuing with the main install of OS 3.9.

OS3.5 had the same thing.  Although it's possible to install 3.9 on a clean HD, whereas with OS3.5, you had to have 3.1 on it.

I must have missed that step or just did it and dont remember the pre install part. I'll have to put in my CD to double check on that one. I only remember the options to install over 3.5 or install over 3.1 and making a emergency disk.
