IDE cd-rom and HDtoolbox
« on: February 19, 2003, 08:23:43 AM »
Hi all,
I bopught a second hand artec IDE cd-burner and sometimes it is recognizes and sometimes not whereas my IDE HD always is. Error message is cannot open scsi.device and HDtoolbox can not find anything else on the scsi.device besides the HD.
What is wrong here ? (A1200PPC+OS3.9)

Check that either:
CDR is jumpered as SLave, with
HD as MAster
(If they're on the same cable)

or:

Both are set to MAster
(if they're on different cables).

Could also be a power supply problem - if you have another PSU around try connecting the CDR to that (on it's own).

AFAIK they are right configured ! Funny thing is that under debian linux, everything is always recognized !
Power supply ? well it is a tower with 230W PSU and I removed a few things like df0 and extra scsi drives to save power but still this porblem.

Strange...

Do you have a proper IDE splitter and software? If you do, the new scsi.device in OS3.9 may be causing trouble.

Elbox (and some other) splitter software installs it's own scsi.device replacement which is made resident after a reset. OS3.9 also tries to make another version of scsi.device resident after a reset. This might explain why the problem is intermittent.

Change the Setpatch line(s) in your s:startup-sequence to read something like...

Setpatch QUIET SKIPROMMODULES scsi.device
(might be SKIPROMUPDATES actually, but should be right.)

Setpatch thing is done (in fact since I bought OS3.5 I have this option for setpatch, otherwise no IDE drive would be seen).
I dont have an IDE splitter, because AFAIK I dont need one (at least until now), my A1200 should handle 2 devices without a buffered interface.

OK...

Are you using a 2.5" HD? These often behave strangely when other devices are on the same bus.

How long is your IDE cable? Unbuffered interfaces can be more susceptible to problems with long cables.

Do you have a spare 3.5" HD around? Try hooking that up instead of the CDR to see if it's just a problem with the device - perhaps your IDE i/f is dodgy?

Maybe it's one of those crap drives, that don't get recognized after software reset? Just push reset switch, and see, if it works after that...

(I guess, Amiga boots too fast for such drives...)

my HD is 3.5'' and dual cable is as short as possible (in fact only the CDR is on a bay, my HD is laying at the bottom of the tower).
I think it is something with scsi.device.
Now I reactivated blizkick in my startup-sequence and until now the CD is recognized.
Thanks
