Desperately in need of SFS help! Checksum eror
« on: November 30, 2004, 09:01:29 AM »
I'm having some really huge probs with SFS atm.

SDH1: is the partition that has gone bad. SDH0: is my boot partition and is
not affected at all.

Ok, here goes, I'll try to describe as good as possible what I have done so
far and what happens. Firstly when I try accessing the partition SDH1: it
says: Checksum error on block 8. Workbench does know its size and freespace
etc. though.

HD Info output:

SDH0:   97.9M   56.7M   41.2M  58%    0 read/write SFS0    System
SDH1:   17.6G   11.7G    5.9G  67%    0 read/write SFS0    Amiga

SFScheck outputs the following:

4.Ram-Disk:> SFScheck SDH1:
Partition start offset : 0x00000000:06226000   End offset : 0x00000004:6c290000
Surfaces         : 1       Blocks/Track  : 136
Bytes/Block      : 2048    Sectors/Block : 2
Total blocks     : 9224404
Device interface : NSD (64-bit)

Checking RootBlocks
...okay
Checking AdminSpaceContainers at block 2
Block 8 is not a valid admin block but it is marked in use in AdminSpaceContainer at 2
Dump of first 64 bytes of block 8.

...damaged

I tried SFSSalv. The one from url: http://home.wtal.de/js/SFSSalv.lha which
outputs version 0.16.

Tried it twice now. Both times it stops at exactly 50% saying:

Error Code: 45

I can press Continue, a lot... I can press LeftAmiga - V and hold that
combination so that the requester dissappears everytime. It then progresses
along, until it says Reading Disk, which takes very long too. After some
hours the requesters appear again. I have not managed to get a file salvaged
this way. Someone sent me version 0.17 of SFSSalvage. When I try that, it
says: Not a DOS disk and then quits :/

The SFS version I'm using:

4.Ram-Disk:> version L:SmartFilesystem full
SmartFilesystem 1.214 (10-12-2003)
AmigaOS m68k

I also tried the Verify Data on Drive option of the old hdtb 3.1. That
outputs:

Drive reported no errors from verify command.

So I can probably say that there is no hardware related problem here. Best
would be if SFSSalv would finish its job. Can you tell me some more about
Error Code: 45? Maybe some other versions of SFSSalv that might work? Or
maybe disable block 8 and ignore it ;)

Help desperately needed, thx in advance,

Gerb

P.S. I also posted this message on the mailinglist, but it hasn't come through yet.

Hi

SFSSalv 0.17 here (the one inside the latest SFS archives) but works it correctly, only with NSD compliant device (NOT TD64)

ftp://de.aminet.net/pub/aminet/disk/misc/SFS.lha

Use only SFSSalv 0.17 from the archive.

If you have installed IdeFix, DON'T use SFS 1.227.

BTW . .  .start SFSSalv in "Fast" mode.

EDIT- just noticed a tool called DumpBlock inside the main archive. (Smartfilesystem:Tools/)

Hi Framiga, thx for answering, but as i stated before:

the device is NSD (see SFScheck output) and I allready tried 0.17, but that one fails in both modes with:

Not a valid DOS Disk

Greets,

so try this:

DumpBlock ?
DEVICE=DRIVE/A,BLOCK/N/A

Never used personally but . . . could be useful

It's a dump of block 8 when I do:

DumpBlock SDH1: 8

... but it isn't very usefull to me ;-)

Lemme know if you want to see the output.

BTW, the hd is situated on the scsi kit of the blizzard and has the latest 1230scsi.device version.

erm .  .to be honest, i've had the same situation some months ago (SFS 1.214) due an early BT version of Amigift.

Although i've been able to restore some dirs (with SFSSalv) the most went been lost :-(

I've noticed that you are using blocks of 2048 . .  .why so large?

If on those partition, you have to do with large files, so OK (ie video-audio editing or so) otherwise, a smaller blocksize, will enhanche your HD performance a lot.

Bye

most was lost? ...oooh, doesn't sound hopefull

I know about the big blocksize, seems it is hardcoded somehow in the scsi disk. Not able to change that with amiga utils though.

Ok, SFSSalv has finished and the total outcome is rubbish :-(

37 files, 73 dirs, 22 MB salvaged.

Oh, and the files that *are* salvaged aren't correct, cause they aren't really the files... somehow :-?
