Amiga 4000, SyQuest 105mb Drive, 17" Monitor

I am completely new to Amiga. Recently I received a box containing an Amiga 4000 with a 120meg HDD, 6MB memory and a SyQuest 105mb drive and a crap load of disks. I've never used an amiga in my life. When I boot the system up I end up in this Workbench 3.0 program that looks absolutly horrible. The resolution is like 320x200 on my 17" Iyama display. Does anyone know what OS I should install on this and what settings I should adjust to get the best possible graphics? Also I would like to connect it to my home network so I can move files too and from other machines if that is possible?  Where would I Get an upgrade for the Amiga to alow it to do this?

Ok, *sigh*, the "Workbench 3.0 program" is the Operating System.  Like Windows 95, 2000.  Sounds like someone got a little carried away with customizing it.  This version is a little outdated and limited in what you can do.  You can upgrade to the latest, AmigaOS 3.9, It is a major upgrade but nothing like Win XP.  You can also install Linux if you like.  If you are in the US goto http://www.softhut.com to buy a copy of 3.9, very worth it.  If you want to see what the OS looks like in all it's glory, check out my pictures gallery on here to see some screen grabs.  Keep in mind I also have a 24bit graphics card in my 4000.

Nice setup! What is the state of the clock battery? I am talking about the accu on the motherboard to keep the time accurate which normally destroys your nice Amiga after 5 years of use
Many progams exist that will enhance the look of Workbench, the Amiga's GUI, such as VisualPrefs, FAT, Birdie and of course Amiga OS 3.9.

I have no idea what the state of the battery is  I haven't even opened up the box yet.  However my system does appear to have another video card installed in it maybe thats a 24bit card.  I'll have to do some more research.

You must treat the battery as a priority...they tend to leak on those machines if they are old, and then your motherboard could get damaged.

The battery is in flawless condition. Check out http://www.ridemods.com/amiga/. I'm selling the system now because I just dont have the time to learn it.
