Well, I don't want to be banned, but I'm really quite sick of seeing "Is OS4 here yet?" threads. They come and go too often.

well, OS4 is being developed even as we speak. which is to say, beta-testers get new files every single day. and those of us lucky enough to see a beta-testers system during local amiga meetings get to see the progress.

and believe me, it's progressing!

just the other day i was seeing if the USB port worked on a micro. there are issues, but my "complaining" will result in a report sent to the programmer and improvements will be made.

just call me the squeeky wheel  :lol:

I know it's frustrating waiting, but if you want a functioning OS, these things take time.

cecilia already gave pretty nice round up of AOS4 developments.

Other than that...

It's about as usable as traditional AOS (has some new stuff, lacks some other).
It is years ahead of AROS (which is years behind AOS3.9).
It has some things MOS1.4 does not have (TCP-IP, Altivec), It lacks some other things (WarpUP support).

Applications and SDL game ports appear daily/weekly.

Next public update release will deliver better support for PPC750GX CPU and perhaps some other fixes.

Next bigger update will be the final release, I think. (I predict that it will not appear before the end of the year)

I dont know if I understand this right.. so if OS4 has Altivec support..does that make the operating system run faster or "fpu" type activities faster?  I know on MOS there was some hoopla about Altivec support going to be added and when it will stuff will work faster.

EDIT: I deleted someones post and another user quoted them..the second users post was deleted, I'm sorry.  Feel free to repost it.

I thought MOS had altivec support, to be honest. Stuff is only faster if its written specifically for Altivec.

Edit: OK, well heres basically what I said. I can't post as much as I'd like (NDA..), so heres some of whats already in the public domain:

* Almost entirely PPC native. Only exceptions are console.device (which is already being converted to C), a few CLI commands like BindDrivers, and ARexx.

* Native graphics

* Native AHI and MUI as contribution

* Working NallePUH for paula audio emulation (and, I have started work on adding CIA timer emulation to get things like AHX working, but I won't make any promises that it will actually get done).

* Native TCP/IP stack

* Excellent SDK with easily installed optional modules for things like SDL

* Enhanced Workbench, with all the features of OS3.9 plus a lot more

* JIT integration is basically done

* Native Warp3D is in the hands of the beta testers and a few developers, with Radeon support

* Native drivers for Silicon Image ATA and Serial ATA drives

I would have thought that both MOS and OS4 would have saved the Altivec regs during a context switch... in that case any software could use it if so desired... :-?

Well..not necessarily..just in general how  programming efforts are going... How about commercial support? Any new games being developed for it?

Well, its early days on the commercial support. Pagestream, Art Effect, and Audio Evolution are the "big" commercial packages that are promised in OS4 native form so far.

There are a lot of projects in the works. You should find this thread on AW.net interesting...

Also, os4depot.net is getting closer to 200 files on a daily basis... the amount of development seems to be increasing all the time.
