Barnacules in the house (Amiga 4000)
« on: November 21, 2004, 09:40:20 PM »
Hey Guys, I just ran into a old Amiga 4000 with 120meg HDD and 6meg ram and a Syquest 105m removable media thing-a-ma-bopper. I also have an Iyama 17 inch monitor that connects to it though some Analog RGB connector that looks kinda crazy. Anyways I booted the system up into Workbench 3.0 and the graphics look absolutly horrible? From what I've been reading the Amiga 4000 is a good system but I have no idea what i should do with it. Anyone got any ideas on what I should do to make this system useful? Maybe connect it to a network or install some OS that does 640x480x256 or higher resolution/color?  Right now workbench looks like its running at 320x200x16. The system also has a 2nd video card in it that when I plug the monitor into it everything is a bit brighter but no increase in color. Anyways I'm a X86 guy so this is completely undiscovered country so what OS do you guys recommend I install on it and where can I get it? Also does they make 10/1000 NIC's for these guys so I can communicate with other computers on my network?

Thanks,
Barnacules

What you're after for the screen resolution is the Screenmode preferences editor.  It should be in your "System" or "Workbench" volume under the "Prefs" directory.  If your machine has a 2nd video plug, it might have an add-in video card, so when you're in Screenmode, look for video modes that would give you higher resolution and more colours.

As for making the machine useful, I guess it depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend..  you can add accelerators to speed it up, more ram (always good!) and bigger and faster hard drives.

You're probably best sticking with the native Amiga OS on that machine, you could run Linux or NetBSD or something on it if you're feeling brave, but you'd almost definitely want more ram and an accelerator in that case.

I don't know what options there are for Zorro network cards but I'm sure someone can make some suggestions..
:-D I know there used to be a card called the AriadneII (I think) that was supposed to be pretty good.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info but I'm bailing out already. The Amiga isn't the system for me and I just dont have the time to devote to it so I'm selling my whole collection on ebay right now. You can view the collection at http://www.ridemods.com/amiga/ if you want to see some pictures of it all up and running.
