3C589D-TP PCMCIA Card Problem
« on: September 15, 2004, 02:47:11 PM »
I have bought an EtherLink III 3C589D-TP PCMCIA network card but I can't get it to work.

I have it plugged in, CardReset installed and 3c589.device installed.

MiamiInit sets up OK and I enter the following info:

IP: 10.0.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.0.0.1

On the PC I have set up the following: (WindowsXP)

IP: 10.0.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: Blank or 10.0.0.1

Miami goes online but this is where the problems start.

Using the dongle which came with the card (goes straight from the card to the PC) the light is on the dongle until I click "Online" in Miami then the light goes up and 'Network Connections' in Windows doesn't pick up that the network is connected.

If I use a dongle I have from a Hypernet PCMCIA card where the Dongle has a connector for plugging in a network cable, the network connects and 'Network Connections' picks up that the network is connected. But I can't ping my Amiga the request times out and Amiga Explorere won't work either.

Does anyone know what my problem is? Any suggestions? I have read that other people have this card working.

Unless you use a switch or hub you'll need a crossover cable. The 3com dongle itself is a "straight" connection.

I'm using both cardreset and cardpatch with my 3com card but that might not be the problem here.

I have a crossover cable which I'm using with the Hypertec dongle. I do have a hub but no straight through cable, I'll pick one up tomorrow.

Are all dongles the same? Perhaps the Hypertec dongle isn't 100% compatible with the 3Com card.

I was under the impression that cardpatch was for cnet.device only?

I'd be surprised if the Hypertec dongle is compatible with the 3Com card. Even different 3Com cards need different 3Com dongles.

Cardpatch is for all PCMCIA cards, but 3Com cards usually don't need it except after a system crash.

You don't have access to a PC laptop you could try it in?

Well I've got a Synoptics 810M Hub and connected my PC and Amiga to it. And the good news is the PC can ping the Amiga!

However I can't get Amiga Explorer to work and I can't connect to my PC via FTP either. Ive tried AmiFTP and SimpleFTP on the Amiga. With AmiFTP I can't enter my FTP into the site list, I click SiteList then Click New and enter the details but how the heck do you get it to save? All I can do is close the window. SimpleFTP says Connecting but doesn't work.

Do I need to setup the hub in anyway? Port forwarding or something?

Excuse my ignorance, but I presume AmiTCP and SimpleFTP are FTP clients rather than servers. If this is the case, how have you set up your FTP server on the PC?

No, that would make it a router.
