Assigning Tools to files

Hey all I just installed the JPEG tooltype (checked it everything is how it should be) But how do you assign a tool to a certain filetype... I.e I'd like Aweb to open when I select a JPEG Image... is it possible?

I assume you are talking about Workbench when you say "select a file"?

What version of AmigaOS are you using?

With OS 3.9, go to SYS:Prefs/DefIcons, search for "JPEG", doublecklick the entry. An icon information window pops up. Change the "Default Tool" to "/Aweb".

Note that AWeb (or any other web browser) are a bad choice if you just need a picture viewer. Try VT or Visage (Aminet) instead.

With OS 3.5, download DefIcons44 from Aminet. After installing it, follow the instructions for OS 3.9.

If you're using an older Version of AmigaOS, you're pretty much out of luck. Your only option would be to install a Workbench replacement. Either Scalos (looks and feels like Workbench, just way more powerful) or Directory Opus Magellan (a classic file manager on steroids, extremely powerful but somewhat complicated to setup).

I'm on OS 3.0 but I'll probably upgrade at some point, it's no biggy anyway. Although when I open AWeb and go to open and want to select the jpeg file, it doesn't appear so you have to type in the filename... it works but why can't you see it in the load screen?

Because AWeb told the file requester to just display files matching a certain pattern (in AWeb's case, that would probably be something along the lines of "#?.(htm|html)").

Have a closer look at the file requester - you can actually edit the pattern. Simple delete it and all files in the directory will be displayed.

Yes it does, but that one is not configurable by the end user.
