Installing IDEFix
« on: August 25, 2004, 02:19:24 PM »
Im trying to get a 6GB Hard Drive to work in my A1200, I have worked out I need to install IDEFix and SFS (one of the available options). I have both, but IDEFix seems to be all about some CD file system, how do I just install what is required to use the big HD support in SFS (ie scsi-direct.device as I understand it).

Also is this the right process:

1. Install HD
2. Boot using workbench disks, use HDToolbox and partition a System partition (approx 500MB)
3. Install WB 3.0 from Disks
4. Install IDEFix
5. Install SFS
6. Setup rest of HD (ie 5.5GB partition)

I would do:

1. Install IDEFix (hardware)
2. Install HD
3. Boot using workbench disks
4. Install IDEFix (software)
5. Install WB 3.0 from Disks on new partioned HD
6. Install SFS
7. use HDToolbox and partition a System partition (approx 500MB)
8. Setup rest of HD (ie 5.5GB partition)

I've never used SFS so I'm guessing here..
But you don't need SFS to have idefix running

-EDIT-
You could switch the 4 and 5 above ;-)
IDEFix is both for CD drives and HD's or other amiga compatible IDE hardware..

Hi

DON'T use IdeFix97 with SFS 1.227 (on Aminet now). . .it is incompatible.

Use the previous 1.214.

Bye

Thanks guys

I understand all that, but I want to know how exactly you install IDEFix software? If you use the install script that comes with it it just install the CD file system stuff. The docs have a small part about installing IDEFix for hard drives but just tells you to put something in your startup sequence, its not very helpful.

Hum,
yeah,
it should just install everything when you click on the installer...

You startup-sequence should look like this:

$VER: STARTUP-SEQUENCE 46.4 (4.4.2006)
;Startup-sequence for AmigaOS 5.1
C:CheckLMB
IF WARN
SYS:Prefs/4xEIDEPrefs
ENDIF
C:4xEIDE.driver QUIET

blah, blah , blah
rest of the start up here ; QUIET

Hold down the left mouse button on start up/ or click the prefs program to set-up (automatic) the drives ...

I see

So if that stuff is in my startup-sequence, I should be able to install SFS and partition the rest of my drive into one big 5.5GB partition?

IDEFix is a suite of programs, the main two being IDefix and loadide. CacheCDFS is also included and as you guessed is a CDROM driver.

IDEFix and Loadide do roughly the same job. (IIRC loadide makes idefix resident!!)

all you need to have is something like C:idefix (if idefix is in your c dir) in your SS.

Depeding on your confiuration there are a number of arguements you can add to the end of the command.

I suggest you throughly read the idefix instructions as it is all explained there.

Yes it is a dodgy picture, but what do you expect from a mobile phone camera!!

Oh yeah and I own an A1200T/060 with Mediator etc and an A1G3SE

I can't seem to find a copy of SFS 1.214 anywhere, are you sure 1.227 is incompatible with IDEFix?

***EDIT***

Don't worry I think Ive worked it out!

OK, I think I have installed everything correctly.

I partitioned a 200MB FFS partition, installed IDEFix then installed SFS 1.84 into the RDB. Then I go to create another partition and HDToolbox recognizes the first 4GB in the slider bar then resets and shows the next 2GB (if that makes sense).

So it allows me to format another 4GB and 2GB partition which adds up to more than 6GB?
