OS 3,9 on an A3000
« on: August 22, 2004, 12:46:48 PM »
Hi guys, I'm having OS v3,9 installation trouble.

My system is a latest rev A3000 with PPC/233/060/UWSCSI,
ROM 3.1, 96MB RAM(all on the CSPPC, none on the mobo),
XSurf2 and CV64/3D. I've a Quantum Fireball TM 3,2GB had
drive and a Yamaha CDR400AT on the A3000's native SCSI
controller.

I install OS v3,1 and ASIMCDFS v3,8 then make an OS v3,9
bootdisk using the installer script found on the CD, boot
off that floppy and install OS v3,9.
Although the installer reports that OS v3,9 has been
successfully installed on the hard drive, I notice that
there are many .info files missing from the Sys: partition.
In some cases there are also some other files missing from
the installed system (li.e files from the Systems drawer.
Anyhow I've tried the same using CacheCDFS off the OS v3,9
CD to no avail.
What I have noticed though is that I cannot copy any .info
files from any source to my Sys: partition.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated as I'd rather not
reformat the entire hard drive.

I have almost the exact same setup (A3000/CyberstormPPC, CybervisionPPC, 96MB on CS, 16MB Fast on m/b). I use a Quantum 700MB SCSI2 drive and 2X NEC SCSI CDROM on the native controller and a 18GB Seagate Cheetah SCSI3 Ultra on the CS's controller.  I also use AsimCDFSv3.10 and have successfully installed OS3.9 (but not the BoingBags).  The only problem I have is that one of the partitions on the Cheetah drive is not initialized on warm reset.  I have to do a long warm reset (hold down Ctrl-Amiga-Amiga 10 secs) or cold boot.  I don't remember exactly but I think I had trouble with the BoingBags (probably the ROM update was the problem).  I think there is a timing problem between the A3000 native SCSI controller and the Cyberstorm's.  I did operate my machine for a few years without the motherboard battery, so maybe I screwed up the NVRAM SCSI settings.  Seems to run okay now (I'm typing this on it).

Cache works much better then ASIM and I had the same troubles back in the day. What I did was to get a basic 3.1 install setup. Then I got ASIM installed to access the cd and install the CacheCDFS from the CD and remove all the ASIM stuff. Read the Cd again once you have cache working and create a boot floppy from the installer on the CD. This will make a disk that can access the OS 3.9 cd from a boot. Once the disk is done you can boot from that with the 3.9 CD in you drive and install a CLEAN version of the OS. This will wipe out all the stuff on you hard drive, but it works well. Also make sure your drive is no more then 4GB in size. I had a 2.5GB boot partition. You can make your Work: partition as big as the rest of your drive, but the main system partition can only be 4GB or less.

It's worth trying to copy the whole of 3.9 to a harddisk, reset all the r/w permissions, and then install from the HD copy.  IIRC this cures some odd problems as I had trouble with my 2nd release CD that sound similar to your woes ...

Thomas' guide to installing 3.9 on UAE is here:

Most of it applies to real miggies, too :-)

Allright this is what I did last night before going out for a beer...

Installed 3.1 and AsimCDFS setting the CDROM drive as CD3:, not mountable upon startup. Ran the installer off the 3.9CD and installed CacheCDFS setting the CDROM drive as CD0:
When I rebooted the system off the hard drive, I could not see the CDROM while using the CacheCDFS CD0: DOSDriver so I mounted the CD3: AsimCDFS DOSDriver which worked flawlessly as expected. I ran the OS3.9 installer, selected the Install 3.9 on a clean hard drive option and the darn thing worked fine! Well almost as I got 4-color icons... perhaps because I had not isntalled CyberGFX prior to installing OS3.9 - then again, some of the icons were colored...
At least the biggest problem has been solved.

All the icons should install properly, wether you have RTG installed or not :-?

The screen is probably set to 4 colours. That's the case after an OS3.9 installation. Just increase the colours in Screenmode preferences. Probably nothing to worry about.

Too bad we didn't get to drink any beers :-)

Nope the Screenmode is 800x600, 16bit. I can see only a few color icons such as DefIcons and AHI, WarpOS and VincEd in the Prefs drawer and Benchtrash and IoTools in the Tools drawer.
I can only suppose that the OS3.9 installation script expected some version of a library that did not exist on the 3.1 installation partition (since I did not boot from the Emergency Disk).

I still recon this is to do with R/W settings on the install, loads of people have had probs with that! (ie. are the colour icons only things that weren't there in 3.1?)
