What TFT monitors will work with my A1200?
« on: July 02, 2004, 01:59:16 AM »
I want to take my Amiga overseas, so I'd like to upgrade to a TFT monitor.  I found Sony - SDM-X53 will read the video, but they are $425 for a 15 inch monitor.  Anyone know of any cheaper monitors that will work?

Thanks,

Luke

Hum,
all TFT  are expensive (and slow to refresh)...

So what is your amiga hardware like ?
Do you have a a scandoubler or graphics card?
(er, as you know, you need these cos most monitors doesn't sync down to standard Amiga signal rates).

And i suppose that you would want to run NTSC?
...You may find that certain monitors only work in either PAL or NTSC...(Test in the Early Startup Menu)...

My advice is (for that price) i would take my amiga into the shop and plug a cheep monitor into it to see
if it worked, and what the picture quality was like...

I bet they will be too shocked to refuse...

A lot of people have made suggestions for a good LCD monitor on
classic Amiga chipsets.

Hi lanyard,

I use a ViewSonic monitor on my Amiga 2500 computer.  I really like it.  Sharp picture and excellent color.
My favorite TV shows:  Star Trek Voyager, Forever Knight, Stargate SG1, Married with Children, As Time Goes By, Mr. Bean, Smallville, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Xena

Slow to refresh? Sure, there is a minor delay, but we are talking milliseconds... I think my TFT screen at home has a 25 or 30 ms delay, and I can´t tell the difference between that screen and any other CRT monitor... I guess the human eye/brain isnt fast enough to notice a 20-30 ms delay... :)

Blobrana,

I don't really know what my hardware configuration is.  There is a small box called a sync strainer that converts the amiga video out to a standard 13(?) pin video connector.  Maybe it only puts out 15hz because so far I have had to use high end sony and NEC CRT monitors to decode the signal.

That was true five years ago, not today.

 @whabang
Hum,
perhaps i was wrong on that one....

Er, unless i`m a hardened Quake 3 gamer that requires the fastest refresh to be able to play on nightmare level...

[and with the cost of 20" CTR at the £100 level, it`s a no contest, for me]

@lanyard
Hum,
the high end sony and NEC CRT monitors might be able to  decode the signal because they an sync down to 15Mhz?

And all monitors have different ranges (hovering about the 31.5Mhz region ...15x2...doubler), so you may get a weird (and cheap) one  that may sync down to that range...

~ 31.5 - 31.5 kHz (Standard VGA monitor, 640x480 @ 60 Hz)
# 31.5 - 35.1 kHz (Old SVGA monitor, 800x600 @ 56 Hz)
# 31.5 - 35.5 kHz (Low-end SVGA, 8514, 1024x768 @ 43 Hz interlaced)
# 31.5 - 37.9 kHz (SVGA monitor, 800x600 @ 60 Hz, 640x480 @ 72 Hz)
# 31.5 - 48.3 kHz (SVGA non-interlaced, 800x600 @ 72 Hz, 1024x768 @ 60 Hz)
# 31.5 - 56.0 kHz (high frequency, 1024x768 @ 70 Hz)
# 31.5 - ???? kHz (1024x768 @ 72 Hz)
# 31.5 - 64.3 kHz (1280x1024 @ 60 Hz)
