Hi all, I'm new here.
« on: June 23, 2004, 04:19:37 PM »
Hi there,

I just registered to the forum and I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm posting this in the hardward section since this is where I can see myself spending the most time. I'm a Computer Systems Engineering student with a fetish for classic Amigas. Most of my mates at my college think I'm nuts. When they're banging on about their latest Athlon 64bit PeeCee, I quietly tell them all about my latest Amiga purchase. Old school they say. To which I reply, Yes they may be old, but so am I. And anyway the new computers just don't the same soul. Mind you I love the new as well as the old. I'm hoping to find a few people with some technical Amiga knowhow so I can improve my knowledge and keep my Amigas running.

My Amiga Hardware collection:

Amiga 2000 - scsi card 240MB HD - WB2.0
Amiga 1200 - Ebox memory and FPU expansion - 1 GB HD - WB3.1
Amiga 600 - Stock x 3
Amiga 500 - A590 Harddisk with 2MB memory (DRAMs salvaged from a few old ISA VGA cards)
Amiga 500 - stock with memory expansion(512k) x 3
Amiga 1000 - stock - not running, but working.
Amiga CD32 x 2
Roctek Genlock (Yeah they're crap, I know)
Vidi 12 Digitizer
Picasso 2 Video Card
A601 memory Expansion (Not working. Damn battery leaked. Trying to repair)

I don't have any real accelerators. They're just too expensive here, DownUnder. Amigas where never that big here, unless you where in the scene, so the prices on old hardware are rather hefty. Plus, students don't make a lot of money.   :-(

Well on with my first question. Does anyone here have or know of a site where I can get a technical schematic for building a scandoubler/flickerfixer for an Amiga. 1084 monitors are becoming hard to find and I want to start running my Amigas on regular PC monitors. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

@Xamiche

Welcome to Amiga.org! Put your feet up and stay a while.

Nice collection you have going there! Don't worry about people not understanding your hobby computer, all of us who still use the original "classic" Amigas get it at some point or another. Think of Amiga.org as your support group:-)

If you can wait until the end of July, I can help. I'm in the process of designing a scandoubler using devices from Averlogic that make a neat solution, assuming you can solder surface mount boards   :-o

I've just got to check my 31KHz pass through idea and check the Video ADC works, then I can finish the design.

I hope you are handy with a soldering iron, you can have fun with your Amigas. :-)

Hi there,

Thanks all for the warm welcome and for helping me with my question.

To Stedy
Yeah I'm not too bad with a soldering iron. I can handle surface mounted stuff. [Reaches for magnifying glass] :-)
Sounds like a great project, I definately wouldn't mind waiting until the end of July to see how it turns out. I considered designing one myself, but my knowledge on video signals is limited, for now anyway.

Thanks again all for such a quick response. The last forum I joined to ask some hardware related questions (PC hardware) completely ignored me. Maybe they didn't like Newbs.

Hello Xamiche!
I'm new too, how do we get pictures under our names or an
animation?

:-)

With regards to scandoublers - my EZ-VGA Plus external
scandoubler+flicker-fixer gets incredibly hot, maybe a DIY one could
have a heatsink/fan on it for reliability and longer life!

Also consider the NTSC/PAL multi support. I run my EZ-VGA Plus in NTSC
as it gives a better picture. PAL had nasty vertical lines going down
the screen in the colour tone and was a lot darker.

The EZ-VGA Plus also has a red light to indicate `Bypass' and a green
light to indicate 15KHz modes being `FF-Mode'.

The external option is also being considerate to CD32 owners who
cannot use an internal option, possibly along with CDTV and older
Amigas.

Welcome to the Amiga!

If you live in Australia, you might be luckier than you think.

There are three usergroups here in Melbourne, as well as others in Sydney, and (I think) Brisbane. There is also an Australia-wide usergroup as well.

You may also find my overclocking/hardware site of interest. It is in the process of being moved from its old site. The new address is:-

http://members.iinet.net.au/~davem2/amiga.html

There are links to the above mentioned usergroups if you are interested.

6 Amigas? Hmmmm, I thought I was the only one crazy enough to pile up that many antiques...but then I am something of an antique. Crazy enough to fire ceramic sculpture in a wood fired kiln I built from broken bricks and adobe! The "plan" is to use some of my Amigas and toasters and even that ol' Supergen to create a wonderful render farm and make wonderful animations and educational videos! Yup. Any time now. Just have to get them all to boot up correctly and not argue with me about how much ram they have, or if they have a CD drive. Buggers. My original A2000 vanilla baby still boots and has the original battery! Amazing! None of the Winblows machines have lasted a fraction of that time around here. And I have one working 1084S and am reduced to using an old Dell monitor for my A4000D's. Rats. Although the old NEC 3D is still chugging along, and it's a rebuild! Wahoo! Welcome to the forum. Nice guys, they tolerate me, so they must be okay!

The unexpanded Amigas never complain.... it's when your 040 board claims to not have any RAM that it gets frustrating...

Hi there,

Great site you got there Dave. I especially liked the Genlock project. I'm in Perth so the Amiga groups you spoke of are way over the other side of our big brown country, from my POV. Although the Australia-wide group sounds interesting. I'm particularly interested in hearing some testimonials on the AmigaOne. I noticed you have one. Nice 8-)
I have heard from some sites that they aren't much more than a tweaked PowerPC. Before I spend a small fortune buying a MoBo and CPU,I'd like to hear some opinions on the beasty.
