Simultaneous LAN + Internet?

I can connect my Amiga to a PC via Ethernet.

I can exchange files back and forth using Genesis.

I can connect to Internet on my roommate's PC or on
my Amiga.

I can connect to Internet while my roommate's PC
also connects, thanks to a Router.

But trying to have an internet connection AND
a LAN connection operating SIMULTANEOUSLY seems
to give both the PC and my Amiga fits.

I wonder what I have to do for both LAN and
Internet to work at the same time?

Could you draw a quick diagram of your LAN setup? I'm not quite getting it...

Could me on my part though, heavily tired and seeing very  fuzzy :crazy:.

I have two PCs and an Amiga sharing an ADSL connection (router).

This sounds like a very similar set up to yours and I have no problems with it.  

I use Amiga Explorer and samba to connect the machines on the LAN.  All machines have the IP address of the router set as the main gateway.

I am using Miami Deluxe on the Amiga.

So, this setup is indeed possible!  I need more details though of your setup.  What software/network settings/hardware do you have etc?

Which computer is the gateway to the internet connection?

Are the computers setup with DHCP or static IP for the net connection?

I've actually had alot of different configurations here. I've had my Amiga using Miami DX as a gateway to my PC's. Had a PC with windblows XP pro as the gateway. Currently have a Linux box as a gateway. No major problems. Local stuff always worked, although certain windblows games didn't like the Amiga with  MiamiDX over the net (Age of Empires : Age of Kings being the only real one).

Current Setup for me:

- K 6 2 500 running Linux is the gateway
- PIII 667 Windblows XP (DHCP)
- Athlon 1.33Ghz Windblows XP Pro (DHCP)
- Amiga 4000/060 running MiamiDX as the TCP/IP stack (Static IP so I can use AmiFTPd and access from other computers)
- Amiga 1200T/060 using MiamiDx and a Pcmcia Ethernet card (Static IP)
- iBook SE MacOS 9 (DHCP, sometimes static, with Doubletalk for filesharing with the PC's)
- Amiga 1200/030 using Miami (DHCP)

All computers can access the internet with no real  problems.

X-Surf w/  IP CDROM (sets up connection)

And how is the network configged? Do the PC and Amiga have static IP's? And what 'fits' do they have? It's pretty unclear to me what the prob exactly is.

Sort of like..'my car doesn't start' :-).

This is how I do it on a belkin router.
Saying that I use MiamiDX.....

Disable routers DHCP.

If the router has an IP of 192.168.2.1 for example

Give the following

Amiga Static IP 192.168.2.2
PC Static IP 192.168.2.3
Set Netmask to 255.255.255.0
Set Gateway to 192.168.2.1

Ping each way and test the internet connection sharing via the router.

Now set up samba as you have static IP's

Better of following one of the many Amiga samba tutorials on the web and configuring the clients manually.

Can you go into what the difference is between with connecting to the LAN and for the internet. That would really make understanding the problem easier.

Cable -> Cable Modem -> Router

Amiga-> Router <-PC

A friend of mine had a similar problem, but the router he used only allowed 1 PC to connect to the internet... As soon as another PC tried to get net acces the other would be thrown of.. Depends a little on the router I guess.


Quick fix, connect the Amiga to the PC, put another NIC in the PC and conect that to the router;

So like this;

Amiga -> PC (Nic 1)
                  PC (Nic 2)-> router -> cable modem.

Don't forget to share the internet conection on the PC, you may need a hub or a crosscable to connect the Amiga with the PC.

If you mean the "router" is a "hub" then it would look more like this;

Amiga -> hub -> PC (Nic 1)
                              PC (Nic 2) -> cable modem

It's possible to not use a router: you need one of your machines to have a 2nd network card, preferably your PC. You also need to be running some kind of gateway software, like Wingate, or an OS that supports routing - Linux, Windows XP, (Windows 2000?).

Considering the price of Wingate alone, you'd probably be better off with that router.
