The best SCSI to IDE bridge for Blizzards?
« on: October 29, 2010, 03:51:31 PM »
I have a Blizzard 060 (with a Blizzard SCSI Kit IV):
http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/blizzardscsi4
and a Blizzard PPC 603e with onboard SCSI:
http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=154

Now, I'm thinking about installing a SCSI -> IDE -> CF chain on both accelerators (inside their respective A1200s). I have read on this forum that this is a good way to go in order to speed up storage.

Only question is, what is the best SCSI to IDE bridge to use on each Blizzard? I see that Vesalia has 3 Acard models in stock, the AEC-7720U, the AEC-7720UW and the AEC-7730A:
http://www.vesalia.de/e_acard[4136].htm
http://www.vesalia.de/e_acardsata.htm

Witch model would fit with with each Blizzard (060 and PPC)? Are these intercangable? Are there other and better solutions out there?

One more question. I'm thinking of going AmigaOS 4.1 when it arrives for the classic PPC, but will I be able to use it with Blizzard SCSI? As I understand 4.0 had no drivers for it, or am I wrong?

Well, not sure about the BlizzardPPC, but the Blizzard 060 IV SCSI kit gives you a 25-pin SCSI connector, which was usually used with a 25-way D to 50-way Centronics cable. It will happily connect to a 50-pin SCSI connector with a pretty basic cable, and that's the connector on the AEC-7720U model on Vesalia. the 7720UW model has the newer connector which I think is on the BlizzardPPC, but I can't be sure. Either way, you probably don't want the SCSI-SATA adaptor if you're using Compact Flash cards as they work off the 40-pin IDE interface with their adaptors...

Yes I think the 7720U model is the one you need. The other ones (with the UW SCSI) are ideal for the Cyberstorm because that's the SCSI type it has (I have one with a 7720UW and it works just fine).

About OS4.0 support for the Blizzard PPC SCSI, you're right. There is no support for it and according to what was said during Amiwest, that situation won't change with OS4.1 for Classics. :(

Having bought Classic OS4.0 when it first came out I was very disappointed with the lack of support for it, only one update as far as I know. Now with Classic OS4.1 in the pipeline, what's the point point in buying it if there's not going to be any support for it... :(
