A few questions....
« on: January 08, 2003, 11:47:14 AM »
I've had an A2000 in storage for a few years now.  It's been languishing in exile simply because I just don't have enough space to have another computer setup.   It wouldn't have to be stored though if I could somehow hook it into my existing PC monitor to save space.

Therefore I've been watching and waiting for an affordable (read <$100) scandoubler or graphics card to become available.  HA!  I've come to the realization that it probably just aint gonna happen.  Then factor in the cost of an accelerator card and it's even more discouraging.  Now I'm considering getting an entirely new machine instead of upgrading this beast.  Hence my questions!

As I understand it the Amiga 3000 can use a VGA monitor due to it's integrated scandoubler/flickerfixer, correct?  If you guys had a choice, would you opt for an A3000, A4000 or an A1200?  I realize that the 4000/1200 would still require a scandoubler to use a VGA monitor, but is the AGA chipset worth it?

From what I've gathered from Amigans lucky enough to have owned one, the A3000 was about as close as Commodore came to a "perfect" Amiga.  I'm interested in hearing from folks who own one or the other (or both).

What should I look for?  My interests: for now, an Amiga that can run my old software/games on a VGA monitor.  Near future: an Amiga upgraded to OS3.9 with a fair amount of power.

Suggestions?  :-?

I also have A2000. When it comes to upgrading ... it's easier to get complete setup on ebay than just needed components. What you need is a graphic card, probably CyberVision to connect A2000 to monitor.

For games there shouldn't be any problems because you can allways connect A2000 to TV (via SCART cable). For application - the most cheap solution is WinUAE on your existing computer. If you want to feel the real Amiga, your choice depends on your needs: A1200 - small, not very expensive; A4000 - stable, lots of upgrade possibilities; A1 - when WB4.0 is out.

Hmmm, I've actually thought of the TV route now that you mention it baro.

I have a Hauppauge WinTV GO! PCI capture card in my Windows machine.  I figured I could hook the Amiga's output into the RCA in on my card and actually play Amiga games right on my XP desktop.  Kinda sacreligous I know, but hey - my options (and cash) are limited.  Have mercy! :-D

I guess I can locate an a520 adapter on eBay.  Are there any other solutions out there?

Also, a quick question guys:  how would I determine if my A2000 has the complete ECS chipset?  The sad thing is I'm actually the one who set this machine up ~7 years ago.  I gave it to a friend who used it and then eventually gave it back to me.  I seem to recall that I did upgrade some of the chips but never got around to replacing all of them, but I can't recall which ones. :-?

It's a revision 6.2 mobo so it already has the fatter Agnus 1MB chip RAM, Kickstart 2.04, and I believe it also has the Super Denise.  Wasn't there another chip that should be upgraded as well??

Well GFX cards with a passthrough sell on eBay sometimes for sub $100. But that is not ideal. I'd say get a second hand A3000. It starts off with an 030, has the built in flicker fixer, can use a 16 color WB without screwing up the I/O ports and can be bought on eBay for ~$100.
Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!
