How do I upload an avatar?

Yes, I am stupid. Couldnt find any clear instuctions in the faqs or elsewere.
Do I need to host the image? Is this the same as a signature. ?
Any help would be nice.

Click on the "View Account" link at the top left of the page to go to your account.

Then click the "Avatar" button in the row that appears at the top of the account page.

From there you can choose a predefined image, or browse for an image from your computer and submit it. It tells you the maximim size and filesize too.
