Backup and Restore creating zero byte zip files
« on: July 27, 2024, 12:02:51 PM »
This morning I have twice tried using the built in Backup and Restore to create a backup of SystemV46/Programs/Work/Games and Applications.

Both times this has appeared to be successful - it displays the "Creating", "Compiling" and "Saving" stages - but when I check the created zip files they are zero byte and empty.  I am using a freshly formatted (to FAT32) SanDisk 32GB USB 3.0 Stick which works fine on my Windows PC.

I am on the latest version: 46.1.776

The SanDisk 32GB USB 3.0 Stick might not be big enough, the system is 57GB so maybe why its not working, I made a copy of its SD Card instead, but you need to open it up to do that, I did it that way because if the menu stops loading so does not boot you will not be able to restore the system, it needs to be running to restore with the backup option.
I used Win32 Disk Imager to copy it then copied it to another Micro SD Card (Kingston) as a backup, then put it in a SD Card adapter and stuck it on the top of the A600 GS case... :)

I just created a backup of  "Work:" on my public image and it created a valid archive. So in theory this should be working for you too.

I'll try backup of the whole ot like you did and see if that causes an issue. It'll take a bit longer though!

Unless he's filled up his SDCard with games already then 32Gb  more than enough.

This was a backup of the system as it was shipped to me (except for a firmware update), I had not added games (or anything) at that point.

I’ll try backing up just a single section like you did and see if that works.

Post attempt 3:

I created a backup of the whole lot. It worked for me. I was going to include a list of the archive as "evidence" but including it seem to cause an internal server error!

Looks like you are already trying my next suggestion.

Yep, I backed up SystemV46, Programs and Work together and it worked perfectly; created an 86MB file (so a little short of 32GB  ;)).  I will try Games and Applications on it's own next, and then try all 4 again.

Thanks for helping with this. :)

Creating a backup of just Games and Applications worked, as did creating one with all 4!

I'm at a loss as to why it didn't work twice yesterday with the same USB Drive; the only difference is that I have installed some games since.  Anyway, I'm glad it's working now.
