Apollo 4040 issues
« on: November 15, 2023, 03:56:01 PM »
Hi all,

New member here, but long t8me Amiga owner…

I’ve got a weird issue developing on my A4K Desktop setup that contains the following;

- ACILL Re-Amiga A4000 Desktop board with NOS chips (Buster 11 etc…) 3.2.2 Hyperion Kickstart ROMs (47.111).
- 60NS Working Chip and Fast RAM ( 1 x 2MB (CHIP) & 2 x 8MB (Fast))
- Original Rev B Daughterboard (Recapped)
- Phase 5 Cybervision RTG
- Individual Computers (Indivision MK2 CR) clipped onto Lisa.
- Individual Computers X-Surf100
- Phase 5 Z3 FastLane SCSI card (No RAM fitted and jumpers set correctly)
- Apollo 4040 (68040 CPU @ 40mhz) with 128MB RAM

O/S = AmigaOS 3.2.2.1, THORsMMULibs 47.6 with MMU config setup for Apollo 4040 as per FAQ.

Issues I’m facing;

- Lockups in Workbench
- Running full RAM scan (Chip, Fat and Apollo RAM together) in AmigaTestKit can either freeze or get a RAM error around the 1.2 round mark.
- Running separate RAM scans on Chip, Fast and Apollo RAM come out clean. But once powered off and on again Yellow screen or black screen and nothing unless power off and leave for an hour.

Anyone shed light here? I’m guessing this definitely hardware. Have swapped both Chip and FastRAM out with 2 known working sticks of SIMM RAM @ 60NS.
My thinking heat is playing a part here, although I have a good heatsink and Fan running over the 60840 CPU.

This one is a head scratcher…..

Update time (Just in case anyone else may have this issue):

I have pulled the 040 out of the Apollo and replaced this with a 33M version (33 MHz). Just in case the 040 that was already fitted (25mhz) was being taxed too much by the 80MHZ to 40MHZ FSB.

Now running a full RAM scan to test again. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

Well after extensive testing and changing of Daughterboards, removing and adding cards… It appears that the culprit wasn’t the Apollo CPU card after all… It appears something is either wrong or causing issue with the Cybervision 64 card 🤬🤬🤬 After removing this out of the equation all RAM checks out fine.

Do you have another CPU card to try on? Just guessin here, but may it be possible that CPU card is mapping memory incorrectly and overlapping Zorro III memory adress space?

I’m thinking you may be correct here. I’ve just fitted a Mediator 4000Di and have just struggled to get a Radeon card setup. On Occassion I have been getting random lockups and even Gurus of the 8000000 variety.

Only other card I have is a basic 030 25mhz which is slowwwwwwwww! But will give it a go.
