RAM not found on GVP 030-40 combo board
« on: March 15, 2018, 08:45:15 PM »
Splitting this off from the Buddha thread.

I have a GVP 030-40 combo board with 1MB of RAM installed.

Sadly, the RAM is not seen.

The computer is an A2000 rev. 6.2 and KS 3.1.

I've double checked the jumpers and they appear to be correct.  At least according to Amiga Hardware Database and BBOAH.

When I set the jumper to configure the RAM into Zorro space I get the red screen stating the RAM section of the board is bad.  I click OK and the machine proceeds to boot as normal but the RAM is not configured.

Set the jumper for the other address and I lose the red screen, but the RAM is still not seen.

Not sure if this is related, but when I upgraded to a Mini Mega Chip RAM expansion, only 1MB of chip RAM is seen.  Double checked all the jumpers and everything is correct with it also.  And yes, the clip is on the correct pin and not touching anything else!

Tried this with just the combo board and booting from a single floppy and got the same results.

Any suggestions?

Also, given the above if someone would like to swap me an accelerator board that doesn't have the SCSI interface, I'd be interested since I'm using a Buddha IDE board and the SCSI is turned off.

dumb question.. is the ram gvp ram? If possible, does the one meg stick work in another board?

So it sounds like with the RAM disabled, everything works fine.

And with the RAM turned on, you get an error that the RAM is bad.

Could it possibly be... bad RAM?  The system works fine otherwise, and with the board removed?  Is this the model of board where the memory is soldered directly to it?  Possible for you to replace?

I would go through all the obvious checks - clean connectors, no battery damage to motherboard, test with all expansions and other cards removed, triple-check the jumpers... but all else being the same, it just sounds like you've got a board with some bad RAM.  It happens.  Good luck!

@curtis,

I have the same setup but more ram. I always wondered if you could replace the 1 MB
soldered with 4MB, you may get to find out!

That, or dying MACH chips. While there is some hope to get hands at GVP ram, the board is toast if the latter applies.

This is the board with the first 1MB of RAM soldered on.  There is another 4MB with it, but currently it's not installed.

Well, the GVP RAM still isn't recognized, but I figured out what was wrong with my Mega Chip, ME!

Putting the clip on pin36, where it belongs, instead of pin 35 really does make a difference!
