leaky capacitors yet again
« on: October 13, 2017, 07:23:33 AM »
This is turning out to be worse than that battery thing. (at least there's only one batt per Amiga)
What would be good replacement for such capacitors? Some would use tantalums or similar, but other disagree?
Better sorry than worry.

How do you know they're leaky? Do you regularly inspect your motherboard?

I got this Amiga600, and think its capacitors leaked. There is that bad smell, and sometimes video out loses colour. Some solder points look a bit 'dull'.
Anyway, by now, we should replace all electrolytic capacitors, not just audio.
Better sorry than worry.

Yes we SHOULD but can we be bothered if there is no sign of issues and the machine is in regular use?

I'd say yes. otherwise the damage has already been done. that is, unless you regularly open it up, check traces, etc.
it seems quite difficult to de-solder leaked SMD cap, so I'll leave it this time to pro.
( I had lift a trace or two on A4000D :( )
Better sorry than worry.

So what sort of price is normal for recapping an A4000 or A4000T?

A fishy smell?  Some of the old capacitors are actually filled with fish oil..lol, true though.

I think Acill gets around $80 for it.

Do not use tantalums or ceramics! These are the proper parts you need.

SMD   22 µF 35 VDC   EEHZA1V220R      5 pcs
SMD   47 µF 35 VDC   EEHZA1V470P      2 pcs
SMD   100 µF 25 VDC   EEHZA1E101XP      4 pcs
SMD   10 µF 50 VDC   EEHZA1H100R      4 pcs
Through Hole   470 µF 25 VDC   EEUFR1E471      2 pcs
Through Hole   1000 µF 10 VDC   EEUFR1A102L      2 pcs

The number before the number required numbers are the manufacturers part number and can be found at digikey or Mouser.

In the US I charge $80 for a desktop 4000 and $125 for a tower and all its daughter cards.
