NIC issues and performance questions!
« on: February 28, 2004, 06:23:48 AM »
Hey-
Right now, my A4000 is not on-line! I am concidering adding an X-SURF or other ZORRO NIC so I can share the cable internet line currently being used by my Macs.

I also plan to mirage my system in the (kind of) neer future....

Would the ZORRO NIC offer usable performance in comparison to a PCI one? Would it still be usable? Is there some way no hook an eMac to a A4000 for internet connection sharing?  I know that that last question is a pipe dream, but if it can be done, you guys can do it!

Thanks bunches!

C.

Yes, of course!
With only about 10 (or 100) mega bits / second bandwidth available, and less than that actually used, the 25MHz/32bit (zorro III), or 33MHz/32 bit (PCI) is plenty!
Remember, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

You could use a router, but specifics of doing so depend on the exact hardware you choose.

Yes, that's what I was trying to explain to you! ;-)

See, Ethernet & 802.3 is SLOW, and for as long as the local bus (Zorro or PCI) is much faster there will be no slowdown.

PCI is a little faster than current Zorro III machines, however even Zorro III is MUCH faster than the fastest LAN networks (certainly faster than any that I know of, anyway), which means that there would plenty of spare clockcycles in your computer, even if you could transfer data at the maximum speed.

GO FOR IT! :)
