GGLABS A521HD Quick Review
« on: February 29, 2016, 08:10:21 PM »
Hey all, I just got the video slot version of the GGLABS.US component out video card for 2,3,4K video slot.
Thought i would do a quick and dirty review of it. It seems it might be a  good alternative to scan doublers and USA users needing PAL display on  modern LCD TV with component input.

Tested with:
A4000/040
Older RCA 42" LCD TV Model: L42FHD37YX8

The video looks pretty good, text is clear and most importantly it works  in PAL Hires-Laced at 640x512. On this particular tv i saw no flicker  at all,but that could vary on other tv's. I think most flickerfix via  component in.
Bootable floppies of games seemed to work well also, giving a nice display.
The pictures i took were quick and dirty and are in reality very  clear, bright and vivid,so please dont go entirely by my mediocre camera  work.

Conclusion:
I made a offer and paid $36 on Ebay for this card. That seemed a fair  price, but i see pricing is all over the place. I wouldn't pay more than  $36. Why the external version is so expensive at $79 is beyond me?

The fingers on the video slot version seem to be HASL(hot air solder  leveled) i never liked this on cards but its not really a problem, it  should be flash gold on the fingers.

The card could of been made 3/4" longer or so to meet the back of the  slots on the computer, as it is now, the cables go inside. Nothing  retains the card currently so if you move the machine around you need to  be careful the card doesn't come out of the video slot.

As far as display quality goes it looks quite good(better than my  pictures). seems like a great way to get PAL res on modern lcd-tv's with  Component input. Note the pics are likely stretched as i was in a hurry  and did not have time to check the tv for a 4:3 mode.

Hope this helps someone, and if you have one on these please comment on what you think of it here.

Pictures don't look too bad.  Amiga users do like cheap stuff.

Thanks for the review!  I saw these things on Ebay and wondered how well they worked.
I agree about the price the $36 seems fair for non-scandoubler RGB to component transceiver.
I agree at $79 for the external version seems a bit much, one might as well buy a true scandoubler.
