Fix current Amikit for Real install, or go with another setup?
« on: December 03, 2015, 05:25:10 AM »
So, as some may know, a while back my Cyberstorm MK I decided to stink up my living room and die on me.

After sending it off to get it looked at, I ended up getting an adapter for the A3640, so I lost 128mb of ram from the accelerator board, and had to change out the 68060 libraries.  But even after that, I'm now getting some weird RAM issues, upon looking some of them up, it looked like afa_os was the cause, so I disabled that, but it didn't help.

So I got to thinking, the 8GB CF card he sent me has WB 3.9+BB1-4 installed, and it seems to work fine, it's just the Amikit for Real install having issues on my 160GB drive where all my stuff is.  Should I attempt to fix the current setup, or should I wipe it and try out one of the other setups, or just go for a OS3.9+BB1-4 configuration?  The Amikit one only has BB1-2, I really liked how it ran previously, but without the CPU fast ram, it's quite a bit slower (I have Radeon Memory+128mb ZorRAM, which I found Amigakit will upgrade to 256mb version as well).

Opinions?  I'd probably get more performance out of one of the setups with less eye candy (the CF card version he sent me is REALLY fast!), the loading time has completely crapped out on me for the Amikit install too (not sure what's up with that.)

Would be nice if AmigaSYS 5 would be released, I really liked that bundle.

Well going from 060+onboard ram to a3640 is a good hit on speed, Any of the eyecandy installs will be slow even with mediator. I am guessing os3.9 will be the best bet for what you have there. The cf card is a no brainer, near zero access time compared to a hd makes them snappy.

Some other options if you are handy, the 3640 can be sped up quite a bit, 30-35 mhz with the onboard 25mhz 040 is possible. its noticeable.
Even faster speeds with a 040/40mhz part may be possible, the pals on the 3640 are good to 50mhz,and 40-45mhz may be possible(with a good sink+fan).

Another option is the 060 adapters that work on 3640.
Of course this does not solve the fast ram issue and zorro3 ram is pretty slow, but sometimes its good to have the ram.I doubt you will use up the 128mb on the zoram.
Mapping radeon ram to the amiga might be slightly faster than zoram, but i have not tried a speed comparison, it may not make any noticeable speed difference since z3 is the bottleneck.

Oh, sorry guess you missed the part where I did get a 040-060 adapter, so I do have the 68060 at 50mhz in it still.  I think the huge speed hit is losing the fast ram on the accelerator.

If I recall when I benchmarked the three memory pools (Accelerator memory, Radeon memory and Zorram memory) I think the Radeon Memory was only slightly faster than the Zorram memory, and the Accelerator memory was way faster.

I do have two SSDs that I was attempting to get working, but they were sort of spotty, one I couldn't get to work (an IDE one, but I suspect the 44->40 pin adapter I bought isn't working for it, but I don't really have a way to test it, the drive works on a usb -> ide adapter I have though).  Now that I have a 'Kickstart 3.9' as well.... it sure seems to boot better for the hard drive as well, so at least that was fixed...

OS3.9+BB4 would be the best option. V1.1 is available from http://amigan.1emu.net/releases/BoingBags3&4.lha , other sites may have obsolete versions.
