Did you remember to set the jumper so it gets the tick signal from video instead of the psu when you changed to a atx?

check the psu under load at the motherboard connector, its easy to insert multimeter probes in the back of the connector. use any of the blue wires for ground probe.

It sounds like a bad workbench install to me,since you duplicate the problem each time. make sure maxtransfer is set right, although most scsi controllers seem to handle this regardless.

Do all the drives have the same filesystem? ffs, sfs, pfs?

Termination could cause the odd behavior, but hard to say since you have this trouble on multiple drives.

You tried with three different hard drives and two different controllers, and they're all failing at "Please insert volume ENV in any drive"?

Just throwing it out there, are you using HappyENV or EnvHandler or any of the other "ENV" replacement utilities?

If not, you should be (I recommend the latter), but that's for neither hear nor now.  Just really odd that multiple different drives all fail at the same point.

Simplify, check the tick jumper and remove any extra boards till it boots, then add them back one-by-one.  +1 for switching to the A3000 onboard SCSI and RAM, and ditch the GVP.  ;)

Thank you for the responses. I am only using the GVP controller temporarily  because it has a 4 pin molex connector I can use to power the hd until I can get an adapter to connect to whatever the name of the new connectors on the atx supply are. I have zorram 256k, progressive perferial proram 3000, or warpengine 4040 I can use as a source of ram in the future. Also I have 3 known working installs of plain 3.1, 3.1 classic wb and 3.9 on 50 pin SCSI drives. I have a ton of ide drives laying around but none are clearly marked what is on them so I have avoided try to boot off fastATA until I know the new PS is working. Hopefully my daughter will go to bed shortly and I can continue testing some more tonight. Thanks again for the responses. Keep them coming. I will let you know how I make out with it.

Probably SATA power connectors.  These are what I use to convert:

I found a SATA to molex adapter and had some time to work on this this morning and I finally got it sorted. I removed all zip ram, removed 040, and all cards from the system and went back to the onboard scsi and it booted from HD first try. I will no try adding pieces back one at a time. Thank you for all the suggestions.

If you have a warpengine, populate it with 128Mb and unless you need the 16mb on the motherboard, dont worry about adding it back. the warpengine ram is just as fast as motherboard ram. Sounds like you have a plan though.
good luck.

Take your time with the ZIP RAM, it's a royal pain to install, especially with the motherboard inside the case. And even more so if you have a possible faulty RAM and you don't know which one it is. Don't ask me how I know ;)
