Burning Kickstart Roms
« on: May 08, 2014, 08:07:14 AM »
I have been trying to burn some kickstart roms, but I am not having any success, has anyone here done this successfully?
I first tried using the rom files from Amiga Forever, but could not get any of them to work, so then I used GrabKick to read the 3.1 rom in my Amiga 2000, I then used CrossDos to copy the resulting file to a floppy, then loaded it into my PC and burned it into a 27c400 eprom, that all seemed to work fine, but when I put the eprom into my Amiga 500, nothing happened.
Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Dave

You must rewire some of the kickstart legs if you have an early A500. do you know your motherboard revision? i think it's required to do the mod on pre 6 mobos.

To use the Amiga Forever "ROM" one must use them in UAE and grab them unencoded -- it is still copyright infringement.  Yes, A500's may need ROM jumpers, or just try it in your A2000.  Better yet, buy a legal copy from Amigakit.

That's right, I forgot about that, mine is a revision 5 board.

I have already ordered some from Amigakit, this is just an experiment for my own knowledge.
I own a copy of Amiga Forever along with a license for the roms, so technically it is not a copyright infringement, why don't you go after the guy who is selling copies of the Workbench disks on Ebay? that is an obvious copyright infringement.

Don't tell me, tell the eBay folks.  I have my own nefarious schemes out in the wild.

Oh, make sure your 27C400's have a refresh rate <160 ns, or they won't work.  I buy the 105 ns ones to be sure (and the A4000's let you jumper select for faster ROMs).

150ns seems to be okay for me, i have burnt a couple of roms that are 150ns and none of them have failed yet. They might be higher specs than they are labeld as or something. Will burn some more and test in my A4k when i'm bored.

I have done this MANY times. I still have all the equipment although the brain is a little foggy. That was a LONG time ago. Try a byte swap as the image you are soft-kicking will not work as is when burned to a blank EPROM. A 27C400 should be fine for a 512k 3.1 image on a Rev 5 A500. A jumper might be required for the ROM to boot in that machine. Try looking up pins 1, and 31 if I recall correctly. Lastly when using a 256k image with a 512k EPROM you must repeat the image of the file to fill the last 256k of the EPROM chip. Any EPROM will not boot with an un-used empty section as I recall.  Most likely you are fighting the "Big Endian <---> Little Endian" swap. Also burn it as Binary only, nothing else should be necessary. Look at the first few bytes in your buffer editor and you will see really quickly what's up.  Also -DO NOT try this without a few blanks and an eraser on hand and be patient. Much trial and error may be required.'

Here is a tip. First simply copy your existing working ROM and see if your process works. Once you have this down, send me a PM for ideas about burning the coolest feature rich ROMs for all of my dusty Amiga's.  I have PAID for just about EVERY LEGIT and legal Amiga OS ever released and I still posses them. This is why I don't find any trouble with burning my own.
