santa's warp engine
« on: December 21, 2002, 09:52:18 PM »
Arriving from the North Pole (er Canada) a Warp Engine for my A3000..It's a 4040 with 32 megs on board..  Im sort of getting it,s new home ready..
Went on Ebay to increase its memory to 128mb..and had some questions as to what memory to get...
or not to get.. Ebay had gold and tin connectors ..Is there a big difference in performance? EDO ram is ok?
How can you tell if single or double sided stick..say double sided too hot for the warp engine.
Also (fpm) what type of memory is it?.

sarkis,

The WarpEngine has run my A4000D at work for about seven years. Just make sure you have good circulation in your box.

For ram, use -single sided- Sims. Most, if not all, double sided  Sims are too thick to fit properly with another Sim behind them.

If you have any questions, leave me a note at Amiga.org. I have the manual and disk at work.

;-) The Warp drive in my A3000 works just fine with double-sided SIMMs, though it's a snug fit.  In the A3000 desktop case, the Warp card sits under the drive bay area, and has a low ceiling.

The 4.2 Gig drive should be fine for a start.  With SCSI, you'll be able to add more drives in the future.  The SCSI controller will connect to the drive with a standard 50 conducter ribbon cable.  An old one should work just fine, unless it's been worn out or something.

:-D Good luck, and Merry Christmas!

Hi All,

While Quixote is happy with double sided Sims, I have heard much grumbling about them over the years. Some are probably thicher than others.

I boot my A4KD from a 4GB drive connected to the WarpEngine, the CD-Rom is also in the chain. That used to be external, but moved inside a few years back with no problems.

Too bad the company did not last long enough to get the 060 model out.

I have 3 warp engines all 040 40's. The scsi works great, as they are not as picky as some. The ram is thought. I really don't know what to look for in the 32meg simms. I have only one set out of three that is recognized by the we. So only 1 we has 128megs, the other we's all  have 64megs each. BTW I have double sided simms on it also but it is a tight fit.
In the 3000 I had to remove the drive tray and hack a hole in it for the simms. The daughter was a real tight fit, giving it a slight bend. Of course this is because  all my we's are 4000 types with 4 simm sockets all alighned verticaly instead slanted like the 2 on a 3000 we.

Wish I could figure how to 060 mine. :-D
