Hotplugging USB Serial??
« on: September 26, 2013, 09:34:29 PM »
Ok so we all know that hotplugging serial ports is bad, certain pins could make contact in the wrong place at the wrong time, and you could end up with a real mess.  But what if you you leave the serial cable plugged into a USB serial converter and leave the computer on as you plug it in?  USB is designed to be hotpluggable. I have always turned off both my amiga and my laptop before plugging in the serial converter into my laptop, but I'm beginning to think that might be overkill...

You've definitely been lucky! I suggest not pushing your luck any further. I've had a few occasions where serial or parallel cables got accidentally unplugged and each time it blew a CIA. Not fun, but at least those were socketed chips and easily replaced. A surface-mount repair would be super annoying.

I can't see where unplugging a USB connection would hurt anything.
Serial or parallel ports, sure.
But a USB connected device, even by an adapter?
No way.

Parallel I can see...
But serial?
Is this just an Amiga quirk?
In telco and networking, it is common practice and accepted to hook up serial hot...  It's how you config and troubleshoot...  I've literally done this thousands and thousands of times in that area...
