Picked up an A1000
« on: July 04, 2013, 04:47:13 PM »
A few weeks back I was gifted a A1000 boxed with the original A1010 floppy, also boxed along with a 1080 monitor boxed.  As soon as I powered up the 1080 it blew something and smelled bad.  I got my Prevue SyncStrainer and hooked it up to a LCD monitor and the A1000 works fine.  The A1k also smells like burnt electronics but functions fine.  I dont know if its a ex-smokers machine and its been aired out or whatnot.   But I'll disassemble it fully to give it a good cleaning.

I have a few questions since I've never owned a A1k.  Do I always need a kickstart disk or is there a upgrade I can do that eliminates the need?  What other mods do you guys recommend?  Not looking for an accel.  This will be something I use for gaming or retro computing fun.

Perhaps one could bath it in alcohol to get rid of contaminants?

Thanks for the replies.  I'll read up on the links.  I'm assuming I'll have the equivalent sharp display with a. Sync strainer as a 1084?

DJBase (not sure how to get a hold of him, but he's around EAB and Amibay I think??) makes a ROM board for the A1000, so you won't need the kickstart floppy.
I don't use that on my A1000 (it takes some soldering to the main board, and I don't want to do that).  I use a kickwork floppy.  Basically, it's a floppy that has kickstart and Workbench on it, so it's one floppy to get and use Workbench.

Kipper2K (one EAB) makes an awesome RAM board (and needs his CPU shifter to move the CPU a bit for the A1000), and very cost effective!!
There are also several IDE/CF hard drive solutions.
I have a tomthul (guy on Amibay, not sure if he's still making them) dual CF card setup.  It doesn't support autobooting, however with the kickwork floppy I mentioned earlier, I boot off of that.  It loads the kickstart, then loads the driver for the IDE/CF and completes the boot off of that.  Easy.
MKL (on EAB???) makes an IDE board also.  I believe it supports autoboot, but you need a 2.x ROM or a custom 1.3 ROM (with the scsi.device from 2.x I think???) to get it to autoboot.

No..
(Small religious war here..  Some people (like me) prefer CRT to LCD for Amiga games..)
That said, I didn't think a sync strainer was a scan-doubler/flicker fixer (???) so I didn't think it would work for 15khz modes????  If that's the case, your LCD would still have to scan down to that range.  Not all LCDs do... (A lot don't.)

However, if you want a screen larger than a 1084 will give you, CRTs get much more awkward as the size increases.
I have an LCD on my A1200 with a larger screen.
I still prefer the quality of the display of the games on the A1000 on the 1084, but for Workbench/apps/etc, it's nice to have..

Enjoy!!

Here is Kipper2k's stuff for sale http://kipper2k.com/amigaforsale/
you will need to get the 4 or 8MB RAM with A1000 adapter. The adapter is used to move the RAM board away from the floppy drive.

@desiv
The sync strainer is mostly used with Video Toaster boards by providing a correct signal that is necessary for the Toaster to bootup when using with VGA type monitor. It can also be used a 23->15pin converter. He probably has a monitor that supports 15KHz displays.

I have a DKB Kwikstart board in my 1000. It lets me use a Kickstart ROM from a 500/2000 - actually two of them switching between versions if needed. It's a more "invasive" install, requiring wires on the daughterboard, and some PAL chip replacements. I think there's a hack on AMINET to install a single ROM.

Amiman has helped you out with Kipper2K..
As for DJBase, I think you have to e-mail him..
But I don't have his e-mail address.
Maybe someone else here does...

Good luck!
