I have a few questions since I've never owned a A1k. Do I always need a kickstart disk or is there a upgrade I can do that eliminates the need?
DJBase (not sure how to get a hold of him, but he's around EAB and Amibay I think??) makes a ROM board for the A1000, so you won't need the kickstart floppy.
I don't use that on my A1000 (it takes some soldering to the main board, and I don't want to do that). I use a kickwork floppy. Basically, it's a floppy that has kickstart and Workbench on it, so it's one floppy to get and use Workbench.
What other mods do you guys recommend? Not looking for an accel. This will be something I use for gaming or retro computing fun.
Kipper2K (one EAB) makes an awesome RAM board (and needs his CPU shifter to move the CPU a bit for the A1000), and very cost effective!!
There are also several IDE/CF hard drive solutions.
I have a tomthul (guy on Amibay, not sure if he's still making them) dual CF card setup. It doesn't support autobooting, however with the kickwork floppy I mentioned earlier, I boot off of that. It loads the kickstart, then loads the driver for the IDE/CF and completes the boot off of that. Easy.
MKL (on EAB???) makes an IDE board also. I believe it supports autoboot, but you need a 2.x ROM or a custom 1.3 ROM (with the scsi.device from 2.x I think???) to get it to autoboot.
I'm assuming I'll have the equivalent sharp display with a. Sync strainer as a 1084?
No..
(Small religious war here.. Some people (like me) prefer CRT to LCD for Amiga games..)
That said, I didn't think a sync strainer was a scan-doubler/flicker fixer (

) so I didn't think it would work for 15khz modes?

If that's the case, your LCD would still have to scan down to that range. Not all LCDs do... (A lot don't.)
However, if you want a screen larger than a 1084 will give you, CRTs get much more awkward as the size increases.
I have an LCD on my A1200 with a larger screen.
I still prefer the quality of the display of the games on the A1000 on the 1084, but for Workbench/apps/etc, it's nice to have..
Enjoy!!
